Motto

In the context of the Castello di Vigoleno, where I(3) stayed in the summer of 2025, this motto and coat of arms belong to the Scotti family (specifically the Scotti Douglas branch), who held the castle for over six centuries, from 1389 until the early 1900s.

Meaning and Significance

The Motto: "Nunquam Retrorsum" means "Never Backward" or "Never Retreating." * The Intent: It serves as a "call to arms" and a statement of character. For a powerful feudal family like the Scotti, it signaled to their allies and enemies that they were steadfast, courageous, and would never yield their ground or their principles.

The shield I photographed is a classic representation of their lineage:

The Two Stars: These are "mullets" (six-pointed stars), which are a central part of the Scotti family heraldry.

The Bend: The diagonal stripe across the shield is called a bend.

The Douglas Connection: The Scotti of Piacenza eventually added "Douglas" to their name, claiming a legendary (though historically debated) descent from the famous Scottish Clan Douglas. The motto Nunquam Retrorsum is actually shared by some branches of the Douglas family, reinforcing this ancestral link.

Notes:
1.  Many of the captions are as supplied.  I would welcome detailed descriptors.
2.  It should not be assumed that these are all armorials for the Douglas Scotti - that has still to be determined.
