Armorial bearings of the Douglas family in
Lincluden Abbey |
Notes:
1. This crest is also of
St John Blacker-Douglas of Elm Park - needs checking? And
probably Thomas Dunlop Douglas (see
stained glass window).
2. This crest (a raven?) is linked with the
motto 'Sursum', a motto used by the Pringle family. Or is it a
martlet/swallow - the sign of a 4th son? 3. I
have included the Keith, Lockhart and Pringle crests (below) because of their similarity with the
Douglas crests, and close relationships between the families. 4.
I assume he has three crests because he held three titles.
5. See The peacock
6. Blanks appear when I re-position the images - not from
deletions. It is all work in progress.
7. The terms armorial, coat of arms, heraldic shield and crest have been used
loosely and often incorrectly. I will work towards getting them
right!
8. Help identifying 'Unknown' arms would be
welcome.
9. David Lyndsay, or Lindsay, married the court
seamstress,
Janet Douglas. Seven years later was appointed Lyon King of Arms, and knighted.
10. This armorial is from a
teapot.
External link: • The 'Coat
of Arms Database' provided images of many of the family's coats
of arms variations.
