Vigoleno Castle
Fortress of the Douglas Scotti
Perched above the Stirone valley, Vigoleno Castle is one of the best-preserved fortified villages of Emilia-Romagna. Its origins lie in the early Middle Ages, when the site guarded the routes linking Piacenza, Parma, and the Apennine passes.
The present walls and towers took shape between the 12th and 15th centuries, forming a compact defensive system of ramparts, battlements, and patrol walkways. Within the enclosure stands the Castello Palazzo, the residential heart of the estate.
From the late 14th century, Vigoleno became the seat of the Scotti, later known as the Douglas Scotti, a noble family whose influence shaped the region for more than five centuries. Under their stewardship, the fortress evolved from a military outpost into a refined noble residence, balancing strategic purpose with the rhythms of estate life.
In the 20th century, the castle entered a new chapter as a centre of artistic and social life, yet its medieval fabric remains remarkably intact. Today, Vigoleno stands as a testament to the endurance of a landscape, a lineage, and a community shaped by centuries of change.
