| A Reverend John Douglas married Margaret,
sister of William Douglas of Cavers, and they were probably
distant relatives, with issue William and James |
|
The only Margaret who was a sister of a William Douglas of Cavers was the one who married William Erskine of Dryburgh on 3/11/1664 |
| William Ellot, 5th Laird of Horselyhill,
married Elizabeth Douglas daughter of James Douglas of Cavers
d.1580 and had a son William Eliot of Cavilling, Burgess of
Peebles ??(1572-1610??) |
|
Horselyhill is in
Ireland – but this Elizabeth married William Eliot of Stobs
Answered 27 Oct 2025- there is Horsleyhill near Hawick |
| John Douglas,
said to be son of Archibald, Parson of Glasgow is thought to
have married Margaret, daughter of William Douglas '8th of
Cavers' |
|
William was the 9th of Cavers, but he didn’t have a daughter called Margaret |
| George
Douglas of Cavers was excommunicated for the slaughter of Mr.
George Douglas of Tympenden in 1614 |
|
Sally Douglas’s pdf states that she knows of no George Douglas of Timpendean from this time, and speculates that he might be a Bonjedward. Indeed, here
https://loudounkirk418696562.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/douglases-of-bonjedward2.pdf there is a “George Douglas c1540 Bonjedward to aft 1610”, and there is no George Douglas from Cavers from that period

Richard Douglas advocate ‘cousin’ conundrum. Richard the advocate appears in these two sources:
o
https://www.douglashistory.co.uk/history/thomas_douglas
o
https://electricscotland.com/history/ladies/ladies15.pdf |
|
In both of them, Richard is referred to as a cousin, but the first problem is that he cannot be a cousin to both Thomas Douglas and William Douglas as they were three generations apart! The only known Richard Douglas advocate is Colonel Richard Douglas, but was he killed at the 'Storm of Dundee' in 1651 before either event? Assuming he wasn’t, the only way he could fit the first scenario would be as the nephew of Thomas Douglas, 2nd baillie of Edinburgh, whilst to fit the second one he would have had to be the great uncle of William Douglas (12th). As an aside to this, the first link lists the tutors of Katharine Rigg’s sons, but Thomas Douglas (brother of William 11th) to her pre-deceased Katharine’s husband. Similarly, Sir William Eliot of Stobs (1st husband of Elizabeth Douglas, sister of William 9th) died in July 1654 more than a decade before any of Karathine’s sons were born. |
| James Douglas
mentioned in 1432 charter as “Jacobo” |
|
Which charter in 1432 is this from as James is Anglicized translation of Jacob, and in previous charters we have seen cross referencing to deceased persons purely for context, so was this “Jacobo” alive in 1432 or is it a historical reference? |
| According to
Charter 21 of James IV 1509 (Crawford's MS. Baronage in
Advocates' Library) Archibald 3rd Laird is said to have "died in
1508 in defence of the realm, in resisting the old enemy of
England" |
|
This must have been a different Archibald as numerous sources record this one’s date of death as 8 April 1486. |
| Archibald
3rd’s first-born was Elizabeth, who would marry Sir Alexander
Stewart, 3rd Earl of Galloway |
|
Elizabeth married Sir Alexander Stewart, 3rd of Garlieston – the 3rd Earl of Galloway married Lady Mary Douglas, daughter of James Douglas, 2nd Earl of Queensberry.
|
| Archibald
22nd Laird, like his father is also sometimes referred to as a
Captain in the Rifle Brigade |
|
Instead that honour belonged to Archibald Sholto George Douglas. |
| Archibald
Douglas said to be a brother of Sir James Douglas 8th Laird |
|
Archibald Douglas d.1610 who was Chaplain of The Archdeaconry of Glasgow in 1573 was descended from the Douglases of Dalkeith |
| Euphemia
Douglas who married Sir John Scott 4th of Gala was said to be a
sister of Sir William Douglas 9th Laird |
|
That Euphemia was the sister of Sir William Douglas 12h Laird, the birth dates of their children are far too late for it to be otherwise |
| Thomas
Douglas said to be a brother of Andrew Douglas (father of George 18th Laird |
|
Proven incorrect according to research in "A Hawick Word" book |
| William
Douglas 14th Laird died unmarried |
|
Possibly true, but mention of marrying Jean Irwin on 22/8/1710 and having daughters Jennet (b. 17/9/1714) and Margaret (b. 18/1/1717) |
| Sir Archibald
Douglas 1st Laird married Margaret, but was she Margaret Gray or
Princess Margaret Stewart |
|
Balance of probability suggests Margaret Gray, daughter of Depute Sheriff Duncan Gray |
| Sir Archibald
Douglas 3rd Laird married ???? |
|
His supposed wife was Margaret “Margery” Cessford but she was his sister who married Andrew Kerr of Cessford so at present this remains unknown
