Mary
Douglas
Mary
Douglas was elected to Wiltshire County Council in May 2005 and was
appointed to Cabinet with responsibility for Children and Families.
In May 2006, she was given joint responsibility for Community
Services, which comprises adult social care, libraries, community
planning and community safety. She has held several cabinet posts
including Cabinet Member for Culture, including libraries and
heritage, the arts, and sport.
Mary Douglas has lived in
Salisbury for 9 years and is an active member of the local
community. She is a mother of 17 year-old twins (in 2010) (boy and
girl), both of whom attend the local grammar schools. She worked for
IBM before taking a career break to raise her children, and
subsequently worked in a secondary school. Mary is also a qualified
piano teacher, although at the moment she only has time for one
pupil!
Mary is a member of City Gate Church, Salisbury,
having become a Christian at university, some 28 years ago. She was
a governor of St Mark's Junior School and worked as a volunteer with
Wiltshire Parenting. Her husband has recently executed a 180 degree
career change, from I.T. professional to nurse, and now works in the
local hospital.
