TLt Lionel Peirce Douglas RCNVR HMS Nile (Alexandria, Egypt) 27/11/41 102nd ML Flotilla at Alexandria, Egypt

Killed in action 20/6/42 at Tobruk in HDML 1039

The withdrawal from Tobruck was carried at with considerable loss. It cost the life of Lieutenant P. Douglas RCNVR, commanding officer of a Motor Launch, which according to unofficial information, was detailed to ecacuate the staff of Navy House and was therefore delayed leaving until all other naval craft had sailed. When he was finally ordered to sail, a German tank had reached a position on the breakwater from which it covered the Harbour exit. In running the gauntlet, Douglas was killed when the tank scored a direct hit on one of its depth charges.

LT Douglas had previously assisted in a salvage job for which he earned a signal of congratulation from C. in C. Levant. I torpedoed Dutch tanker had been torpedoed but the hulk was still afloat. Lieutenant Douglas put a crew aboard the tanker and two RN tugs towed her back to Alexandria.

He was the son of Capt. Lionel Dale Douglas and Christine Peirce Douglas, of Vancouver, British Columbia.
