The current Douglas-Bate family are descended
partly from Vice-Admiral Sir Henry
Percy Douglas KCB CMG FRGS FRAS AMICE (1 November 1876 – 4
November 1939) who was a British naval officer specialising in
surveying. He was also hydrographer of the Navy and responsible for
initiating the creation of the ASDIC group that led to the ASDIC
system.
ASDIC stands for Anti-Submarine Detection
Investigation Committee, and was an early term used for sonar
technology primarily developed and used for detecting submarines.
On 28 December 1899, he married Katherine Chute
Mackenzie, daughter of John Mackenzie, of Belmont, near
Kirkcudbright. They had one daughter, Kathleen Hay
Douglas, from whom the Douglas-Bate's are proudly descended.
The current generation of Douglas-Bate's
founded MapAction and Global MapAid, both being NGO's designed for
humanitarian purposes, by providing visual knowledge to aid and
donor organisations seeking to help people in great need, so that
complex situations can be more swiftly and accurately understood and
acted upon.

Chairman) co-founded MapAction in 1997. This followed a
45-year career in industry in Europe, the Middle East, India
and the Americas working in steel, shipping, commercial
security and recruitment. He is also a trustee of the
charity RAPID-UK and serves as a district councillor in
Buckinghamshire. |

William (Bill) Cornelius Grootenhuis was a shipping
agent for England and Holland and worked for the Holland
America Line and Rotterdam Lloyd. His métier was sprinklers,
steering gear and shipping stabilizers. He later joined the
Dutch Navy and became A.D.C. to Admiral J.T. Fürstner,
Minister of Naval affairs and Commander of the Navy. He
attained the rank of Commander. He married Else Mary Wormald,
but in later life, he was divorced from her and married his
wife's best friend from the Paris days, Kathleen
Douglas-Bate. |

George had 3
brothers - William b. 1907, Fred and Albert (birth dates
unknown). His father re-married at some point - we're not
sure why - and he and his new wife had another child who was
half-brother to George, William, Fred and Albert - his name
was Sid.
George and Gertrude (known as Rose) moved to
Sandy, Bedfordshire where George ran a taxi service "G. Bate
& Sons" from his home in Kings Road, they had 3 children -
Philip 1929, John 1934 and Doreen Anne (my grandmother)
