Index of first names

After the death of Archibald, 6th Earl of Angus the Earldom fell to the Earldom fell to his nephew, David, and the Douglases of Pittendreich. David, born circa 1515, was the elder brother of James, 4th Earl of Morton, who became Regent of Scotland during the reign of Mary, Queen of Scots. David married Margaret, daughter of John Hamilton of Samuelson, sometimes called 'Clydesdale John,' who was a brother of Regent Arran.

He is described as 'sickly and inactive'. It seems that he did not formally take up the title, nor was feudally invested in his considerable estates.  David died in 1557, at which point the Earl of Morton took on the duties of tutor and guardian of the infant 8th Earl, thus bringing the earldom under his control.
