Charles Douglas was licensed by the Presbytery in 1738 and began his ministry in Jedburgh on the 1st of March that year. He was presented to the parish by Archibald Douglas of Cavers on the 1st of May and formally ordained on the 16th of August. His tenure was cut short by his death on the 1st of December 1745.

Charles married Isobel Douglas, daughter of Walter Douglas, minister of Linton. Isobel survived her husband by three years, dying in Dalkeith in January 1748. Together, they had six children:
- Andrew, born 10th November 1735 ; Physician and Man-Midwife
- Walter, born 14th June 1737
- Archibald, born 4th May 1739
- Isabella, born 21st September 1740, who later married James Newbigging, a writer in Edinburgh, in January 1759
- William, born 3rd March 1742
- Charles, born 5th August 1744
