The name has many variations such as Sterritt, Starrett, Stirritt, to name just a few.

The Sterritts were a sept of the Douglases by right of having been tennants on Douglas lands near Mauchline, Scotland, in early medieval times, thus owing feudal allegiance to the Douglas lords.
