During the battle, the troops of Mohamed feign a retreat drawing Douglas and his knights into an ambush. "Black" Douglas was able to fight his way clear but turned back into the fray on seeing several of his knights encircled by the moors and about to be slain. Realising he was about to die, the chronicles say that he tore the casket containing Bruce's heart from around his neck and threw it at the moors sayng: "Now, go in front us, as you had desired, and I'll follow you or I'll die" (According to Robert Dundas Murray - 1846).
