Sir William Douglas of 2nd of Drumlanrig

William Douglas, heir to his father, was among the hostages sent to England in 1427 to secure the release of King James I. He later gained recognition for his role in the Battle of Sark in 1448, where the English suffered a decisive defeat at the hands of Earl Douglas and Hugh, Earl of Ormond.

Despite a royal mandate issued on June 7, 1451, William, Earl Douglas, his superior, refused to formally acknowledge him. A notarial protocol recording the Baron’s protest against this decision remains among the historical documents of Drumlanrig.

William Douglas died in 1458. He was married to Janet, daughter of Sir Herbert Maxwell of Caerlaverock, and was survived by their son.
