Francis Marion "Spinney" Douglass

 

 

He was reputedly a notorious horse thief who was the son of Lancaster Douglass of Switzerland County, Indiana. 

His last sentence for this crime was completed at the Michigan City, Indiana. State Prison in 1900. He served about 5 other sentences and was born circa 1847. He also had trouble in Kentucky and possibly in Ohio too. 

 

There is a suggestion that he married Mary E.

 

It was rumoured that he was hanged by a lynch mob.

 

Notes:

•  Lancaster was the son of John Douglas b 1774 Virginia d 1859 Iindiana (himself the son of John Douglas d 1780 VA), who married his first cousin Hannah Douglas, daughter of William.

Lancaster Douglas and Elizabeth Thomas were married in Switzerland Co. 25 November 1826.

Lancaster must have died before the 1860 census. Lancaster Douglass' widow Elizabeth re-married once or twice. In 1880 Elizabeth Chace, age 72, widowed, b Ohio is living with her daughter Rosanna Hodges in Switzerland Co.
