William Douglas of Moffat, 1581 (Great Seal Register). Arms of Douglas of Moffat are shown in Sir David Lindsay's MS., 1542 — Argent, a lion's head erased gules, on a chief of the second two stars of the first.

He was the son of Patrick Douglas of Corehead, who in 1542 was also described as being 'of Moffat'.

They are descendants of the Douglases of Morton and Dalkeith.
