Luther Douglass.
From the Enterprise, published at Chico, California. We ta ke the following concerning the death of Luther Douglass , a former well known Chariton resident:\ "Luther Douglass , prominent Civil War veteran of this city died at the Enlo e hospital late yesterday afternoon followed an operation p erformed in a last effort to save his life. The opperatio n was more then the faling strength of the aged veteran cou ld withstand and death followed soon after.
Luther Douglass was born February 14, 1833 and was a nativ e of New York. During his younger days he lived in Indian a and later moved to Chariton, Iowa. He served throughout t he Civil War as a member of the Thirty-fourth Iowa Infantr y.
Six years ago he came to Chico and has since been a membe r of Halleck Post, G. A. R. of this city, of which he was o ne of the oldest and most respected members.
Only a week ago last Saturday he celebrated his 82nd birth day at a social affair at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Th omas Auld, in Chico Vecino.
He is survived by two daughters, Mrs Thomas Auld of Chic o and Mrs John Allen of Oakland, and by three sons, Dr. H . E. Douglass of Pacific Grove, formerly of this city, C. R . Douglass of Tonopah, Nevada, and A. R. Douglass of Charit on, Iowa, There are also seven grandchildren and a number o f other relatives.
The funeral will probably be held next Staurday but no de finant arrangements have yet been made."
