    Lt-Col. 85th Regiment of Foot (ret. 1802).
    Elsewhere recorded as dying 1834
    Green Croft was recorded as a property in Annan, owned by Col. Douglas, on an 1826 map of the town.

    (Research):Mr. Douglas Cox's godfather was Colonel William Douglas, brother to that most excellent officer and worthy man, the present Vice- Admiral John Erskine Douglas,

    He retired from the military in 1839, with the rank of Captain, late of the 20th Foot.

    Notes:

    He was educated at Ecole d'Evangelique, France.
    He graduated from Lille University, Lille, France, in 1847 with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)
    He emigrated to Victoria, Australia, arriving on 1848.
    He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) [Victoria] between 1876 and 1895.
    He lived at Victoria, Australia.

    Gavin James Saturn Douglas was sent to Australia on a family allowance to further his experience in colonial teaching. Came with his tutor on the SS Anne Milne arrived April 6th 1848 and stayed with family Winter Irving who acted as guardian at Ballarat. He chose to stay on while is father journeyed to Mexico with his second wife and then to New York. Gavin became a pioneer of the western districts of the state of Victoria and a magistrate for the area known as the Merino District. His twin sisters remained in France for many years.

    He married Margaret Ethelda Moore and had 14 children (attached photo). The most notable of his descendants is Roland Douglas who became a police officer killed young in service and his son Clive Douglas who became a widely acknowledged composer and conductor of a number of orchestras.

    One of his daughters was Agnes Blanche who married James Munn Chaston - they had 6 children including my Ethelda Margaret.
