Angela Drake nee Douglas writes: My Grandfather was William Edgar Douglas born 3rd Feb 1894 Church Street, Maxwelltown, Troqueer district of Stewartry of Kirkcudbright, son of James Douglas (occupation:- a Gardener) wife Sarah McGowan (occupation a weaver). They had 8 children, Sarah, Mary M, Agnes, Caroline V, Robert, David J, John E and Sarah ....and my Grandfather William Edgar. James and Sarah were married 25th Jan 1886 in St Andrews Roman Catholic Chapel , Dumfries. William Edgar Douglas father was James Douglas born 28th May 1864 at Gatehouse-of -fleet in the Girthon parish of Kirkcudbrightshire, he was son of Robert Douglas (occupation a gentlemanly valet) mother Margaret McMichael. Robert Douglas and Margaret McMichael were married 29th Dec 1863 Anworth Parish Church Kirkcudbrightshire. Robert Douglas was born in Anwoth 1839 son of James an agricultural labourer and Dorothea Cummins, 1851 census sees Robert working at a bobbin mill aged just 12. He had an older sister Agnes 21 at that point plus a younger sister Mary aged 9. James and Dorothea were married at Blackbridge in the Balmaghie parish of Kirkcudbrightshire 12.Jan 1821. His father James Douglas born 23rd Dec 1799 Kirkbean in Kirkcudbrightshire his parents were Robert Douglas and Heny Davison.

There are conflicting reports as to the origins of William Douglas, and some of the theories have already been challenged, if not disproved, by the dna project. There are suggestions as to travel on the Mayflower (second voyage), though that too seems unlikely. Whatever his origins, he founded a dynasty. All contributions to this study are very welcome

Deborah (Douglas) Barry writes: My mother was Marion Isobel Douglas, 1921-2007 born in Toronto, Canada. My grandfather was William Douglas, born 1888 in Canada. I don't know more, only that Grandad was one of six boys. I believe his parents were also Canadian.
