12. | Alexander (Sir)(of Cumnock And Westfield) Dunbar (4.James3, 2.Euphemia2, 1.Patrick1) and died. Notes:
"Alexander (Sir) DUNBAR of Cumnock and Westfield, who because of hisvalor and intrepidity was called the Bold Sheriff of Moray. His firstwife was Jean Falconer, daughter of George (Sir) Falconer of Halkertonand his wife Elizabeth, daughter of John Erskine of Dun."
From Doug Hickling:
"In his HISTORY OF THE MUNROS, MacKenzie says that Robert Munro XIV ofFowlis "married Margaret, only daughter of Alexander (Sir) Dunbar ofCumnock and Westfield, Sheriff of Morayshire, by his second wife Janet, daughter of John Leslie of Parkhill, son of William third Earl ofRothes. The Coul MS says that Dunbar was a daughter of "the Laird ofHaggerton Falcken, no doubt meaning the family of Falconer of Halkerton,Kincardineshire, from whom the present Earl of Kintore is descended."
I spent some time yesterday at the Sutro (genealogical) Library in SanFrancisco studying mostly THE SCOTS PEERAGE trying to figure out thisAlexander (Sir) Dunbar's ancestry. I had already decided that he couldnot be the
Alexander (Sir) Dunbar of Westfield, son of James (4th Earl of Moray)Dunbar, because he died in 1498, which was probably before Janet (orJoan) Leslie was born.
In v. 7 at page 281, this book says that Joan, the daughter of JohnLeslie of Parkhill, son of William 3rd Earl of Rothes, married Alexander(Sir) Dunbar of Cumnock, Knight, with issue 2 sons and a daughter. In v.9, at page 110, there is a note that Patrick (Sir) Gordon of Huntlymarried (1) shortly before 4 February 1578, Jane Leslie, "Moyness, daughter of John Leslie of Parkhill and widow of Alexander (Sir) Dunbarof Cumnock. She died in August 1579."
THE SCOTS PEERAGE apparently does not provide ancestries of mere knights, but as I recall the entry for Alexander (Sir) Dunbar of Westfield refersto him as the progenitor of the Cumnock Dunbars. It seems to me that myAlexander (Sir) of Cumnock is probably a grandson of the Alexander (Sir)of Westfield, but I have found no help in the Roots/Web gedcoms. I seeseveral entries for a Alexander (Sir) Dunbar of Conzie, who is a grandsonof Alexander (Sir) of Westfield, including your own gedcom entries, butnothing that shows a Alexander (Sir) Dunbar of Cumnock."
"I mentioned above that it was hard to find information on the successorsto the first Dunbar Sheriff of Moray because he and they were not peers.
However, I found the information needed in Robert (Sir) Douglas's THEBARONAGE OF SCOTLAND, published in 1798. By some miracle, the UCBerkeley rare book library had this work in its collection and thequality of the paper was so high that they even made photocopies of itfor me"
