Obituary
Mrs N. A. Douglass, one of Chariton's Pioneer women, and lo ved by all who knew her, succumed to a siege of pneumonia a bout ? o'clock last Thursday morning. She was confined t o her bed for a few weeks, although she had been in ill hea lth for years.
Nancy Antoinette Mitchell, daughter of William Clay and Fr ancis Mitchell, was born in Lawrence county, Indiana, on Oc tober 24, 1841, and passed away at her home 632 Linden aven ue, Chariton, Iowa. January 8, 1931 at the age of ? years , 2 months, and 15 days. She was a member of a family o f ? brothers and 3 sisters, of who only one brother survive s, George Mitchell of Hobart, Oklahoma. She was united in m arriage to Voloney D Douglass on March 28, 1867. To them th ree children where born. Ella and Willie died in infancy, a nd Edward Q. died December 17, 1892, at the age of 24 years.
Shortly after her husbands death in 1872, she moved to th e home in Chariton which has been her residence for fifty-e ight years. Her husband was a soldier of the Cival War.
Early in life she united with the M.E Church and was a fai thful and consistent memeber, and while health permited wa s an active worker.
William H Norris, a nephew, the only surviving relative o f this county, has shared her home for the last eight year s and has been a great comfort to her during this time, ass isting in caring for her. She is also survived by a numbe r of nieces and nephews not of this place. Two sisters in-l aw, Mrs Effie Kneeland of this place, and Miss Tessie M Dou glass of Des Moines, faithfully contributed to her care an d comfort.
She possesed a strength of character never to be forgotte n by those who knew her best. Her principles of truth, kind ness and justices where of the very highest type. She cam e to Lucas county when a child and has gone through the exs periance of the hardships of the days of the early fifties , the reminiscence of which she never tired of relating. Sh e had been a sufferer in failing health several years prio r to her passing and exspressed herself ready and willing t o lay down the burden of life. She outlived all the other m emebers of her family. Everything that loving hands could d o was rendered for her comfort, but her maker claimed his o wn.
She was layed to rest on January 10, 1931, beside her love d ones in the Chariton Cemetery.
Funeral services where conducted at her late home on Satu rday afternoon at two o'clock by her pastor Rev. E. L. Ston e, assisted by Rev. M. S. Clark. She will be missed by a ho st of true and devoted friends.
Among those in attendence at the last rights on Saturday w here a niece Mrs Roy Newlund, of Ankeny, and a sister in-la w Mrs Tessie M Douglass, of Des Moines.

Nancy married Volney D Douglass on 28 Mar 1867 in Lawrence Co., Indiana. Volney (son of Noble Douglass and Louisa Bales) was born on 19 Aug 1845 in Jackson Co., Indiana, USA; died on 29 Jan 1873 in Chariton, Lucas Co., Iowa. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
