Erastus Clore, one of the oldest and most respected citizens of theByron Community, died at his home north of Byron (Bryon-by locals)Wednesday morning after a lingering heart condition. Funeral servicesat the Byron Christian Church of which he was a member will be heldthis afternoon at 1:30 P.M., in charge Rev. John Servies. Burial inMaple Ridge Cemetery.
Mr. Clore was the son of Berriman and Mary Rice Clore and was bornnear the place of his death on March 9, 1857. He is survived by threesons, Bernard, Earl and Vern; Two daughters, Mrs. Charles Mitchell andMrs. Raymond Spencer, all living near Byron. Mrs Johnson Clore ofCrawfordsville is a sister." Shades State Park borders both Parke and Montgomery County, Indiana,and is where Erastus's farm was located.

Erastus Clore was born Mar. 9, 1857, in Howard Township, Parke County,the son of Berriman and Mary Rice Clore, and lived there all his life.
His father was born in Boone Co., KY, in 1817, and came to Indiana in1830. His mother was born in Henry Co., KY, and raised their fivechildren on their farm in northeastern Howard Township.
Berriman Clore was the son of Isreal and Frances Deer Clore. Theyboth were born in Virginia, then moved to Boone Co., KY, and on toParke Co., IN, where they spent the rest of their lives.
Isreal received a Patent Deed for land in Howard Township in 1831.Isreal, his son, Berriman, and grandson, Erastus, were farmers inHoward Township.
Erastus also owned a mill and a resort called "Pleasant View", onSugar Creek, in the late 1800's and early 1900's. In 1967, his heirssold the family farm to the Indiana Department of Natural Resourcesand it is now a part of Shades State Park. There is a campground forcanoeists located close to where the old resort was.
In 1881, Erastus (Ras) married Armenta (Minnie) Carter. She was thedaughter of Jacob and Elizabeth Lowe Carter. Ras and Minnie were theparents of Earl and Pearl Clore and Jewell Clore Mitchell. Minniedied in 1891. Pearl died in a hunting accident at the age offourteen.
In 1892, Erastus married Elvie Keeling, daughter of Dexter and MaryLowe Keeling. They were parents of four children; Bernard and VernClore, Gladys Clore Leath, and Betty Clore (who died in infancy).
Erastus and Elvie, along with others in the community, organized andbuilt the Byron Christian Church in 1904, and were both active in thechurch all their lives.
Erastus was a deacon in the church. After his death, Elvie was adeaconess in the church. A quiet, Christian lady, she was dedicatedto her family, her church, and her community.

Elvie continued to live on the farm. Her brother, Owen Keeling livedwith her. He raised glads and sold both the flowers and the bulbs.
When the home burned in the late 1940's, she moved to Waveland andlived there until her death, Apr. 30, 1962, at the home of her son,Bernard Clore." [Transcribed 23 January 2008, SLJuhl, compiler, dau.]
