Reference:MS3101/B/21/4
Description:
These consist of copies of entries from parish registers recording the baptism of children born as the result of relationships between Joseph Douglas Strutt and three unmarried women and copies of agreements and memoranda relating to financial assistance given to the mothers of these children by Joseph Strutt. All these papers were kept by Joseph Strutt and include annotations in his hand. They comprise: copy of entry from an unidentified parish register recording the baptism of Joseph Henry, son of Anne Pickering in 1817 and Frederic Douglas, son of Ann Pickering in 1819; memorandum of an agreement made between Joseph Strutt and Rev Edward Higginson on behalf of Anne Pickering, dated 1819, concerning an allowance to be paid to her for the upkeep of the child she already has, and the child she is about to have, on condition that she has no communications with Joseph Douglas Strutt and moves away from Derby to Birmingham; copy of an entry from the parish register of Osmaston near Ashbourne recording the baptism of Hannah Wallis, illegitimate child of Hannah Wallis in 1814; copy made in 1844 of an entry from the parish register of Osmaston recording the baptism of Maria, illegitimate daughter of Maria Wallis, servant, in 1815; bond made between [Joseph] Douglas Strutt of Derby and John Douglas Cooper of Holme Cottage, Ashborne, Derbyshire and William Wheatley and Robert Hurd of Osmaston, Derbyshire, churchwardens and Michael Bass and Thomas Robinson, Overseers of the Poor, for the payment of an allowance for the illegitimate daughter of Mary Wallis, which [Joseph] Douglas Strutt acknowledges as his child, dated 1816, together with associated papers containing receipts for this payment signed by the overseers; notices from Joseph Strutt, the 'personal representative of [Joseph] Douglas Strutt' to the Overseers of the Poor at Osmaston concerning the cessation of the allowance and his offer to place the child in an apprenticeship, dated 1824.
