- He was chairman of McCorquodale and Company Ltd and a director of the Bank of Scotland.
He was Member of Parliament (M.P.) (National Conservative) for Yorkshire, Sowerby Division between 1931 and 1945 and held the office of Parliamentary Private Secretary in 1939, to the President of the Board of Trade.
He gained the rank of Flight Lieutenant in the service of the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He fought in the Second World War between 1940 and 1941.
He held the office of Parliamentary Private Secretary between 1942 and 1945, to the Minister of labour and was Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Conservative) for Epsom between 1947 and 1955.
He was created 1st Baron McCorquodale of Newton, in the County Palatine of Lancaster [U.K.] on 2 September 1955.
