- Obituary of John A. Blackson: "ANSWERED THE LAST ROLL CALL
Mr. John A. Blackson, a veteran of the late Civil War, died of stomachtrouble at the family home on Cambridge Street last Saturday. His agewas about 62 years, and he was held in high esteem by many friends.Reverend C.C. Erwin conducted funeral services at the home Mondayafternoon. Following, internment was made at South Lawn Cemetery.Published in the Democrat Standard, a Coshocton, Ohio newspaper April06, 1900. Article would not reproduce a quality print." DECLARATION FOR WIDOW'S PENSION.State of Ohio, County of Coschocton, ss; On this day 7 day of April,A.D., one thousand nine hundred, personally appeared before me, aNotary Public, within and for the County and State afoesaid, ElizabethBlackson, aged 50 years, a resident of Coshocton, County of Coshocton,State of Ohio, who, being duly sworn according to law, declares thatshe is the widow of John A. Blackson, who enlisted under the name ofJohn Blackson, on the 12 day of November A.D. 1861, as a Private inCompany D, in the 78 Regiment of Ohio Volunteers, and served at leastninety days in the late War of the Rebellion, in the service of theUnited States, who was Honorably Discharged March 22, 1863, and diedMarch 31, 1900. That he was not employed in the military or navalservice otherwise than as stated above. That he was never employed inthe military or naval service of the United States after the 22 day ofMarch, 1863. That she was married under the name of Elizabeth Gay tosaid John A. Blackson, on the 16 day of May A.D. 1861. That she hasnot remarried since the death of the said John A. Blackson. That shemakes this declaration for the purpose of being placed on the pensionroll of the United States under the provisions of the Act of June 27,1890." Infantry at Rural Dale, Ohio on the 12th day ofNovember 1861, to serve 3 years; he was born in Muskingum County inthe State of Ohio is twenty two years of age. 6 feet 1 inches high,Fair complexion, Blue eyes, Dark hair, and by occupation when enlisteda Farmer. during the last two months said soldier has been unfit forduty 60 days. The said John A. Blackson was Ruptured when musteredinto Service and has been growing worse ever since, and for the lastsixty days has been doing no duty of any kind. Station: LakeProvidence, LA.
