- From Charles Case:
"The Viets family of Simsbury is thought to have been of German origin and to have come from Biesback near Freiburg on the Rhine. The founder of the family was Dr. John Viets, who was living in North Simsbury by 1710. He was a medical doctor, perhaps the first trained physician in Simsbury, and had been educated in Germany. Born about 1665, he first landed at New York when he was brought over as the medical officer for a group of German miners. It may be that he accompanied the miners who worked the Higby copper mines north of Simsbury. He was admitted as a resident of Simsbury in 1710, and on January 6, 1711, he purchased 12 acres of land from the descendants of John Griffin in the area which was later to be known as East Granby. He married Catherine Meyers, also from Germany, before 1798. p.150

I am a descendant of Dr. John & Catherine (Meyers) Viets through their son Capt. John and his wife, Lois Phelps, their son, Seth, and his wife, Ruth Smith. Seth & Ruth's daughter, Lydia Viets (1779-1836) and her husband, David Cleveland (1777-1855) were my ggg grandparents and are buried in Hinckley, OH.
I do not have any info. re. Benoni Viets, but the name sounds familiar. Can you give me more details about his later life?
Have you been to Simsbury, CT, where they lived. I can tell you about that if you are interested.
Do you have ancestry of Dr. John and Catron (Meyer) Viets?
