- William Mathews was born in Virginia, and died in Oglethorpe County, Georgia between the date of his will, 1 October 1799, and the date of probate, 7 February 1802. He married Elizabeth Thornton MERIWETHER, who was born in 1772 and died in 1845. She was the daughter of Francis MERIWETHER and Martha JAMIESON.
Gilmer [Gilmer, George R., Sketches of Some of the First Settlers of Upper Georgia, of the Cherokees and the Author, orig. publ. 1855, reprinted, Americus, Georgia, 1926.] states that:
"William Mathews, second son of Gen. Mathews, married Elizabeth Meriwether, daughter of Mr. Frank Meriwether, an exceedingly clever woman, as she proved in her after life by the admirable manner in which she discharged all the duties of wife, mother, friend and relative. William Mathews never studied Greek or Latin, was a planter and succeeded very well. He never held any office higher than Captain of the Militia of his district, and that was forced upon him, rather than sought for. Militia musters were great bores to many of the Broad River people..... William Mathews lived at the Goosepond until his death. His family soon after removed to the plantation which had been owned by General Blackburn, in Elbert County."
The Will of William Mathews, dated 1 October 1799, was filed 7 February 1802, and recorded in Will Book A page 108, records of Oglethorpe County, Georgia, the following abstract of which has been published:
".....mentions his wife Elizabeth and his five children, to-wit: Anne, George, Frances, Charles and William. My executors to purchase Mr. Blackburns land for soil purposes on Broad River for my family to settle near their connections. Each child to have their part of the estate as they come of age or marry. Exrs: My wife and my brother George Matthews, Jr., William Barnett and Thomas Meriwether and Joel Barnett."
In addition to the five children named in his will, an additional son is named in the will of General Mathews.
