- NOTE: In the research that this compiler has done on this family itbecame apparent that this "Wendel" family is the only one in the areasdiscussed. Albeit, that each family had multiple children and largefamilies in general, so that the family grew tremendously and quicklywith many, many branches. However, the genealogy portion of the malemembers with just the surname Wendel-Wendell who are direct lines ofthis immediate family were not too numerous, and thusly in the censusrecords were able to be discerned as to who was who in the early yearsof settlement along with source # 2 below.
1). SOURCE: In following the Federal Census records back to 1840,it was possible to place Daniel D. Wendell as a white gentleman of20-30 years old with a 20-30 year old white female (wife-Harrietprobably) together living in Portsmouth, Rockingham County, NewHampshire. Living in the same county was 50-60 year old Abram(Abhm-Abraham) Wendell with his family. Along with them was Edward S.Wendell and A.Q. Wendell probably brothers or near relatives. ADaniel W. Wendell and Jacob Wendell also lived near them, and are nodoubt near relatives. More research is required on the family; However, it is surmised that since the ages in the census records domatch, and they are all living so closely near each other, that it ishighly probable that Abraham Wendell, son of John Wendell is no doubtDaniel D. Wendell's father and John Wendell is Daniel's grandfather.John Wendell is also in the Federal Census records for 1790 inPortsmouth, Rockingham County, New Hampshire. He is also the onlyWendell listed for the 1790 Census in the Portsmouth area. In the1840 and 1850 census Jacob Wendell is living in Portsmouth also and isvery prominent in business and socially. I refer you to his notes. He did not have a son named Daniel.

The genealogy lineage was obtained beginning with the ancestor fromthe Netherlands to America and the subsequent generations listed inthe book to c.1882 A.D. Even though the book is well over a hundredyears old and the copyright laws are now somewhat laxed with it'susage, only excerpts were noted in this work. The full lineage forthose that are interested is available on the Internet site listedabove.

In this book is the genealogy from the first ancestor from theNetherlands to America onward to c.1882 A.D. After careful study ofthe family line, Daniel D. Wendell could only be the son of twogentlemen who were sons of John Wendell. (1). George WentworthWendell, b. 22 Mar 1771, d. 22 Jun 1836; or (2). Abraham Wendell, b.18 Mar 1785, d. 27 Mar 1865. All of the daughters were ruled out,all of the males who were single, and all of the males who died beforethe year 1812 of Daniel's birth. That left only the two gentlemenmentioned. However, Abraham was the only one living in Portsmouth,Rockingham, N.H. near Daniel D. Wendell in 1840 that was old enoughto be his father. Until further research is completed, Abraham willbe listed as Daniel's father. I must also comment that Jacob Wendellwas in the same census of 1840 in Portsmouth, but in the book'sgenealogy Jacob's son Daniel died in 1807. Jacob is probably NOT thefather of Daniel D. Wendell for that reason. Jacob would probably beDaniel's uncle.
