- He was the Member of Parliament for Perthshire, 1794-1807
After the death of his wife he took up a military career. In 1795 he raised his famous "Balgowan Grey Breeks" the 90th Light Infantry, selling the Blairgowrie Estate to finance this. The regiment was raised by 1500 inmates of the jails of Edinburgh and the Provinces. He placed Colonel Moncrieff in command and the regiment performed bravely in foreign service.
He served with the British fleet in the war between France and Great Britain. He served in Gibraltar, then joined the Austrian Army on the Rhine, as British Commissioner. He assisted in the defense of Mantua during the siege by Napoleon.
He served in Malta, Egypt and Constantinople, attainig the rank of General, while serving in Spain.
He was raised to the Peerage on 3 May 1814, with the title of Baron Lynedoch of Balgowan . His other honours included Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George.
He was also the Rector of the University of Glasgow, and the Governor of Dumbarton Castle.
The Barony died with him.
