Notes |
- Carlyle began his career in the journalism field working for the Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Star-Phoenix newspaper. He and his wife and child moved to Montreal in 1935 where he worked for The Gazette for a short time. He joined the editorial staff of The Winnipeg Tribune in 1935; he was appointed editor- in-chief in 1951. Carlyle was a personal friend and advisor to John Diefenbaker, former Progressive Conservative prime minister of Canada. In 1958 Carlyle was named Member of the Board of Broadcast Governors (similar to FCC); he was appointed vice-chairman in 1960. His seven-year term was not renewed by the recently elected Liberal government. He moved to Winnipeg in 1965 where he became public affairs director for CJAY-TV. He died suddenly soon after retirement from an aneurysm. His initial "G" stood for Gerald that he never used.
