RETIRED FARMER DEAD
William S. Coons Passes Away at His Home in Highland.
William S. Coons, who was almost eighty-one years old, a well knownretired and highly respected farmer, died Friday afternoon shortlyafter 1 o'clock at his home in Highland, after an illness covering aperiod of six weeks. His death was due to brain and spinalcomplications.
Mr. Coons was a native of Tennessee, where he was born January 27,1828. When he was four years of age he removed to this county with hisparents and settled on a farm seven miles south of Crawfordsville,near Old Union church. He lived there practically all of his life;coming to this city last May to reside after having sold his farm. Atthe time of his death Mr. Coons still had the old sheepskin deed whichhis father secured for the land in the early thirties, when it wasoriginally entered. The deed is signed by Andrew Jackson who was thenpresident of the United States.
Mr. Coons was married to Jane VanCleave, daughter of JonathanVanCleave, a Primitive Baptist preacher in 1852 and this yearcelebrated his fifty-sixth wedding anniversary. His wife is stillliving. They were the parents of nine children, six of whom survive.They are Mrs. Sloan Stevens and John R. Coons of this city; Mrs.Caroline Jones, Iuqua, Mississippi; Henry Coons, Mrs. L. M. Douglas,and Mrs. W.V. McCormick, all of this city; The deceased children areMrs. W/S. Coons, Jr., who resided here, Mrs. Catherine Young, wholived in Kentucky, and George W. Coons, who died in infancy.
Out of a family of nine children Mr. Coons and one sister, Mrs.Katherine Van cleave of Wingate were the only remaining ones, Mrs.VanCleave being considerably younger than Mr. Coons.
Mr. Coons was a substantial citizen of this county for many years, andhad a wide acquaintance. He was a Democrat but never aspired to holdpublic office. Mr. Coons was admired for his honesty and integrity.The funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon fromthe late residence in Highland. Rev. Airhart will have charge. Theinterment will take place at Masonic cemetery.
