- He was commissioned in 1900, in the service of the 7th Dragoon Guards. He fought in the Boer War between 1900 and 1902. He gained the rank of Captain in 1905 in the 11th Hussars. He gained the rank of Major in 1912 in the 4th Dragoon Guards. He fought in the First World War between 1914 and 1918.
He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) in 1915. He was appointed Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.) in 1918. He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of St. Michael and St. George (K.C.M.G.) in 1919. He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Kirkcaldy between 1922 and 1923. He gained the rank of Major-General in 1923.
He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Montrose between 1924 and 1932. He held the office of Chief Liberal Whip between 1926 and 1930.
He was created 1st Baron Hutchison of Montrose, of Kirkcaldy, co. Fife [U.K.] on 30 June 1932.
On his death, his title became extinct
