- John Malcolm Johnstone enlisted in the Confederate army in 1864 at the
age of 16 and served in Company H, 4th Regiment, S.C. Reserves as a
Second Lieutenant. In 1884 he was elected Mayor of Newberry, South
Carolina, and served for two terms in the S.C. House of Representatives.
In 1894, he was appointed U.S. Consul in Pernambuco, Brazil by President
Cleveland.
