Notes |
- 1823 (Wright's History): "On the east side of the north transept [Hexham Abbey], a stone slab, beneath a canopy, enveloped in mantling ? H. S. E. GULIELMUS JOHNSTON ?" Perhaps it was moved when the second, lower inscription was added c1861?
1899 guidebook has photo showing the plaque fixed to the wall closing the arch which now leads to the nave north aisle; plaque moved when wall taken down for building of nave in 1908; part of it shown in postcard lying near NW corner of N Transept before its re-fixing.
Burial register: Wm Johnson, chapman, 29 May 1725; Elizabeth Douglas, 13 Nov 1861. Elizabethh Douglas was probably the great-great-great-granddaughter of William Johnson.
