Notes |
- Alexander was the fifth son of King Mael Coluim III (d.1093) and his second wife, Margaret (d.1093). One of his two sisters, Matilda (d.1118), had married King Henry I of England in 1100. He succeeded his brother, Edgar, as king of Scots upon Edgar's death in 1107. He married Sybilla, an illegitimate daughter of Henry I, but they had no surviving children. He had an illegitimate son, Mael Coluim. Upon his death at Stirling on 27 April 1124, Alexander was succeeded on the throne by his youngest brother, David. Alexander was buried in Dunfermline Abbey.
