FRED LOVE, ORION, PASSES AT AGE 67
Funeral Services to Be Held Tomorrow Afternoon in Farm Home.
Orion, Oct. 28 (1940). -- Funeral services for Fred Love, 67, who diedin his home one mile west of Orion, Saturday afternoon, will be heldat 2 tomorrow afternoon in the home. The Rev. C.A. Litchfield of CoalValley will officiate. Burial will be in Western Cemetery. Mr. Lovesuffered a stroke on Labor Day and had not been well since. He wasborn Nov. 12, 1872, in Western Township, the son of James and AnnaLove. On Feb. 20, 1895, he married Clara Stevens at the bride's homewest of Orion. Mr. Love attended rural schools near Orion andbusiness college in Davenport. He lived on farms in Rock Island andHenry Counties all his life. He was supervisor of Western Townshipfor several years. Survivors are the widow; three daughters and twosons, Mrs. Florence Erickson, Mrs. Desil Malmen and Mrs. GertrudeJohnson of Orion; Edwin of Moline and Harold of Orion; sevengrandchildren and one great-grandchild; one brother, Asher Love ofOrion; three sisters, Mrs. Emma Pearce of Rock Island, Mrs. Etta Chaseof Orion and Mrs. Mabel Ekstadt of Santa Ana, Cal.; aunt Mrs. MaryGarrety, 102, of Orion. James married Anna Annie Beatty on 4 Feb 1870 in Morrisville, Pennsylvania. Notes:

The family lived at Knockahollet, County Antrim. This is a littlevillage in the ?North of Ireland,? not far from the sea. Their marketplace was Ballymena. John Love, had a blacksmith shop- ?hooped?wheelbarrows and carts and shod horses. There was lots of shoeing todo, for the roads were hard. John's parents were of Englishparentage. He had married Mary Ann Duncan in 1825. She was thedaughter of a Scotch farmer, who had come from Scotland to Ireland onaccount of religious persecution. John was of English parentage. Hewas also a Presbyterian. John Love and his family belonged to the?Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church of Ireland.? (See Mary LoveGerrity's notes.) He had turned the blacksmith business over to anephew (no name), after which the family set out for America to jointheir oldest daughter Anna and his wife Mary's brother Andrew Duncan. They hauled their goods on carts to Belfast where they bordered theship Wyomia for New York. The night before they left Jimmie Ferrisand Andy Blue came in with their fiddles, and other neighbors came,and they all danced. After arriving in New York City, they made theirway by train to Fallsington, Bucks County, Pennsylvania.
John died after the family was in Philadelphia just two months aftertheir arrival to America from ships fever.

"JOHN LOVE, deceased, formerly a resident of Bucks Co., Pa., and ablacksmith by occupation, was born in County Antrim, Ireland, ofEnglish parentage and ancestry. He was educated in his nativecountry, and was married there April 30, 1825, to Miss Mary A. Duncan,who was born in the same county, June 18, 1810, the daughter of afarmer of Scotch parentage. He had come from Scotland to Ireland onaccount of religious persecution in his native country, he being ofthe Presbyterian faith.
The early history of Mr. Love is only that which is characteristic ofpoor, hard-working and honest people in the North of Ireland, whichcounty had during his day undergone some radical changes in thehabits, etc., of the people. His father had become a skillful smithin his native country, and after his marriage he lived in his nativecountry until 1849. The family were all born near Belfast, Ireland,near the channel separating that island from Scotland. The tenchildren who were born there were Ann, who was born May 24, 1827 (Herhead stone states 26 May 1826.); Eliza, who married John Blair, anddied in Millville, N.J., leaving two children, J.B. and Anna L.; thelatter is a teacher; the third child in the family above mentioned wasJane W.; the fourth is Mrs. Nancy Watson, now residing in WesternTownship, this county; Mrs. Matilda A. Finlay is now a resident ofOrion, this county; Mrs. Mary Garrity resides in Philadelphia, Pa.;William is also married and resides in Western Township; Maria L. andJames; Alexander is married, and is yet residing at the parental home.
On arrival in America the family located in Bucks Co., Pa., nearTrenton, N.J., July 2, 1849. The father died there September 3,following, aged 46. Mr. Love was a Presbyterian in religiousprinciples. After the death of the head of the family the mother andchildren were obliged to maintain themselves. they secured a farm inBucks Co., near Trenton, consisting of 95 acres, where they made theirhome until 1871; selling out in that year, they came to Illinois, andpurchased the southwest quarter of section 8, Western Township, wherethey have since resided, and where they are now enjoying prosperity.They have a good brick residence, and fine out buildings on the farm.The family were all baptized in what is called the "Associate ReformedPresbyterian Church of Ireland." SOURCE: Bessie Blair states in her notes that all of Mary Ann'schildren are buried at Western Township Cemetery near Orion, HenryCounty, Illinois except for Eliza. This compiler did find most allof the childrens head stones in Western Township Cemetery prior to theinformation provided by Bessie Blair; However, the head stones doconfirm her information on the family.

SOURCE: A lot of the family information was obtained from severalnewspaper articles on Mrs. Mary Love Gerrity while living in Orion,Henry County dated from the late 1930's to the early 1940, until herdeath in 1941 at 103 years old. Mary gave livened accounts of herfamilies home in Ireland, their ship passage, and of her life here inAmerica.

"LOVE FAMILY
The "Loves" were a sept., i.e. associated with, the Clan MacKinnon(MacFhionghuin in Gaelic) which held lands on the islands of Mull andSkye off the west coast of Scotland.
The MacKinnon?s claim descent from the same royal line of King Alpineas do the MacGregor?s.
The MacKinnon?s were ("out" in 1715 and again in 1745 in support ofthe Stuart pretenders to the throne of England. On April 16, 1746 theclans were defeated disastrously on the field of Culloden, in thenortheast part of Scotland, by the English, and the clan system cameto an end. Their chief, although old and infirm, was imprisoned inLondon, but was permitted in 1747 to go home. His son, Charles, hadto part with the family estates after they had been in the clanpossession for over four centuries. This may have been the cause ofemigration to Ireland.
The motto of the MacKinnon?s is "Audentes Fortuna Juvat"--FortuneAssists the Daring--their war cry is "Cuimhnich bas Ailpein"--Rememberthe Death of Alpine. Mr. Duncan was a Scottish Farmer. The family moved to NorthernIreland on account of religious persecution. He was a ProtestantPresbyterian. [See Mary Love Gerrity's notes.]
The ousting of many from England and Scotland was occurring frequentlyto many Protestants who lived in those countries, because of KingJames's edicts. Many only stayed one generation in Ireland (if thatlong even) before moving on to America. In North America they weretermed, "Scotch-Irish", although many who were Scottish and heard theterm became upset with it primarily because most of those of Scottishdescent did not inter-marry with the Island Irish. The Scotlandpeoples remained apart from the Irish in Ireland if they remained.There was and still is great animosity between the two sets ofpeoples. So much so that civil strife broke out often between them inIreland. The Scots kept to the North of the Irish Island, and theIrish inhabitants who were forced to give up their land to theseinvaders kept to the South. The Irish did rebell against the Scottishfolks and would not inter-marry with them either. Much of thisanimosity still exists in Belfast, Ireland today in the 21st centurymore than 200 years later between the Irish Catholics and the ScottishProtestants. There are many sources on this topic, and it does makefor very educational reading.
It is also known that the greatest bulk of George Washington's armywas Scotch-Irish, and Mr. Washington states in his memoirs veryspecifically about the Scotch-Irish bravey and tenacity in battle, andhow without them, America may not exist today as it does. If you havean opportunity to read about this you will certainly enjoy it, becauseit is not something that is taught in history books at schools as muchas it should be.
