A Major-General in the Indian Medical Service, he graduated from University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, Midlothian, ScotlandG, with a Master in Surgery (C.M.)
He fought in the Burma Campaign between 1891 and 1892 and in the North-West Frontier between 1897 and 1898 and in the First World War. He also fought in the Third Afghan War in 1919.
He was with the Indian Political Service.
He was Royal Doctor to the Court of the King of Nepal and was Honorary Physician to HM King George V in 1910.
He was appointed Commander, Order of the British Empire (C.B.E.) He was appointed Fellow, Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (F.R.C.S.E.)
