    "Miss Susan Heron told a Miss McKie that her grandfather was on Wigton Sands on the day the two martyrs Margaret M'LACHLAND and Margaret WILSON on the 11th May 1685 were drowned and that his very words were 'The hail sands war covered wi cluds o' folks a' gathered into clusters here and there, offering up prayers for the two women while they were being put down.' Miss Susan HERON died 19th Feb. 1834, aged 87 years, and her grandfather, James HERON died 31st October 1758, aged 94 years old, showing that he was twenty years of age when the women were drowned. The HERON graves are in Penninghame Churchyard." (McKerlie, p. 341)

    He was witness to the two martyrs WILSON and M'LAUGHLIN and left 70 children and grandchildren alive and 30 dead, according to his tombstone. The Penninghame MI transcript reads "A light coloured sandstone copperplate script. Here lies James Heron in Carsnestock who died the 31 st October 1758 aged 94 years and Marion Shan (sic) his spouse who died the 10th of March 1748 aged 70 years old. Also Mary, Jean and Ann Herons their children. They left 70 children and Gr childr alive and 30 dead. "Thes heros hwo were worthy of renoune Who fought the fight and now doth wear the crown."   3. 6.  William Douglas was born in 1668 (son of Gilbert Douglas and Margaret McIlroy); died on 14 Oct 1745; was buried on 16 Oct 1745 in Clachans of Penningham, Wigtownshire.

    Notes:

    William Douglas married Grizzell M'Keand, who probably belonged to a family of that name who for long were tenants in 'Balsalloch', 'Pilwhilly' and 'Aikerside.' William Douglas and Grizze M'Keand had seven children. The eldest, John, continued the family tenacy in 'Balsalloch' and was the father of Sir William. The second son, James Douglas in 'Kilsture', whose testament was recorded in 1762, left a widow, Mary Martin, who survived him till about 1791, when her testament was recorded =: two sons --William Douglas in Petersburgh, U.S.A., and James Douglas in Norfolk Virginia....Much of the evidence for this pedigree is derived from a letter, dated 6th March, 1831, from Mrs. Susan B. Terrell to Harriet Douglas, third daughter of George Douglas of New York, the brother of Sir William Douglas."     I have also this pedigree: William Douglas (b 1649, Cockpen), son of James Douglas and Agnes Rome (who married 1637), married Isabel Elizabeth Kennedy (Died: 1668 - Penningham Galloway) had a son, William Douglas (born 1668 Cockpen, 14 Oct 1745- Penninghame, Wigtownshire) who married 1693 - Grishild McKeand.

    William married Grizel McKeand about 1703. Grizel was born in 1671; died in Oct 1741; was buried in Clachans of Penningham, Wigtownshire. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
