    Benjamin Douglass married Ida Bracy (born in Terry Hines County, Mississippi) on May 4, 1884. Their son James Gordon Douglass was born March 31, 1885 in Batchtown (Calhoun County), Illinois. Ida Bracy died on February 17, 1887. Benjamin Douglass then married Mary Alice Harrell (born in Terry Hines County, Mississippi).

    Notes:

    James' family history in America goes back to Colonial times when 2 brothers came from Scotland and made their way to the "New World." One settled in Vermont and founded the branch of the family that eventually included Stephen A. Douglas, the man who ran for president against Abraham Lincoln in 1860. The other brother settled in Maryland, which was the home for several generations of James' ancestors.

    James' paternal grandfather, Captain Joseph Hamilton Douglas, was born in Maryland on 25 Dec 1747. He was a Revolutionary War veteran. He married a fellow Maryland native named Rebecca Lee Nichols.

    James married Maria Elizabeth Carr on 12 Mar 1856 in incoln County. Maria (daughter of Jonathan Boucher Carr and Anna Barbara Carr) was born on 22 Jan 1825 in Albemarle County, Virginia, US; died on 11 Aug 189 in Batchtown, Calhoun County, Illinois, USA; was buried in Wilson Cemetery, Batchtown, Calhoun County, Illinois, USA.     Notes:

    Maria's family line descended from Sir Thomas Carr of England who bought large tracts of land in Colonial Virginia after coming to America. He was the father of John Carr, who in turn had a son named Overton Carr. Overton lived in Maryland and owned the land that was eventually purchased to form Washington, D.C.

    Notes:

    Joseph Douglas owned a plantation known as "St. George's Regulation", 319 acres in Dorchester and Caroline Counties, Maryland.
    A Captain, he served in the 14th Battalion of the Caroline County, Maryland militia during the American Revolution.

    Died:
    died at the home of his son-in-law Risden Smith in Dorchester County, Maryland.

    Notes:

    he is said to be the niece of Captain Harry Lee, the "Lighthorse" Lee of Revolutionary War fame and father of Robert E. Lee, the Confederate General. According to one source, the Lee connection is supposed to explain the frequent use of the name Henry in the Douglass family. Joseph Douglass' first son, Joseph, Jr., married a Celia Wright and then in 1816 took Charlotte Wilson as his second wife. Seven children were born to them, the fifth being Ann Crawford Douglass. She was the young lady who in 1848, at the age of seventeen, became Mrs. Charles Wesley Carroll."

    Gilbert Thompson was born in 1772 in Maryland. Gilbert Thompson married Jane Shannon on May 26, 1797 in Scott County, Kentucky. All nine of their children were born in Kentucky. Gilbert Thompson and Jane Shannon migrated to Pike County, Missouri in 1821 with some of their children and some of their Thompson and Shannon siblings. Gilbert Thompson's wife Jane Shannon died in 1821, the same year that she arrived in Missouri. Gilbert Thompson then married Jane's sister Susan Shannon (widow of Thomas Stark). One child was born to Gilbert Thompson and Susan Shannon, a daughter Jane Gilbert Thompson (married Milton Biggs). Gilbert Thompson died in Pike County, Missouri on December 15, 1825. In the next year, a court appointed guardians for the minor heirs of Gilbert Thompson. John Thompson was appointed guardian of William Thompson and Jefferson Thompson. Jeremiah Douglass was appointed guardian of Henry [Jacob Harvey] Thompson and Nancy Thompson. William Shannon was appointed guardian of Jane Gilbert Thompson.

Jane was born on 17 Mar 1778 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, USA; died on 25 Oct 1821 in Pike County, Missouri, USA; was buried in Thompson-Douglass Cemetery, Peno Township, Pike County, Missouri, USA.
