Anne was one of the social leaders of a civic elite. A Doctor's daughter from Inverness, she married an Edinburgh civil servant, and unlike her brother-in-law George they never owned a country estate. Yet her husband rose to be Lord Provost, and she gained a reputation for giving excellent parties, and being able to supply you with news of everything that was going on in Edinburgh, but without any of it being unkind or scandalous.

    Notes:

third and only surviving son of Robert Arbuthnot and Mary Petrie

Arbuthnot was a merchant in Peterhead, before moving to Edinburgh at some time before 1772, settling as a banker. He was for many years Secretary of the Board of Trustees for the Encouragement of the Manufacturers and Fisheries of Scotland, retaining the position until his death in 1803. He was succeeded in this position by his son William.

He was possessed of a genial and attractive disposition, and he counted among his friends the poet and philosopher James Beattie, as well as Sir Robert Murray Keith, British Ambassador in Vienna.

Robert + Mary (of Cromarty) Urquhart. Mary (daughter of John (of Craigston And Cromarty) Urquhart and Jean (of Meldrum) Urquhart) and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 5.  Mary (of Cromarty) Urquhart (daughter of John (of Craigston And Cromarty) Urquhart and Jean (of Meldrum) Urquhart); and died.

    Notes:

The home of Mary Urquhart's childhood was Craigston Castle, formerly called Craigsintray, and is one of the finest [remaining] examples of the old feudal castles of Scotland.

(Research):Though no proof is obtainable, it seems likely that Margaret Fraser, grandmother of Mary Urquhart, was the daughter of James Fraser of Tyrie, who was living in 1685 and died about 1705. Margaret's grandfather would then be Alexander Eraser of Tyrie, whose wife was Christian Abercromby.

    Notes:

Jim Brennan contributes: Dr John Alves of Inverness - I can't at the moment give you an exact date for his death, but it was certainly between 1786 and 1793. I THINK it was, in fact, in 1788, but I can't lay my hands on my notes where I am just now, and it may not be for some time until I can be back in Inverness. (Later stated to be between May and November 1788) The Arbuthnott marriage will have been in the hands of Alves's son Archibald, who already had a fortune from the Caribbean, and his widow, who had been forced to leave Shipland when the Doctr's heir, Thomas, who worked as a Depute Provost Marshal in Montego Bay for Lewsi Cuthbert of Castlehil failed around 1790 and had to pay his debt to Cuthbert ( a personal one, it would seem) by making over Shipland to him. Lewis C's commissioner, Baillie of Dunain, cousin to Mrs Alves, seem to have protested at the sale Lewis instructed immediately. The Alves had acted as agents for the Cuthberts in Inverness since 1748 and had been instrumental in preserving the Castlehill estate from jusicial sale after the death of Lewis's father in 1748 until the early 1780s. This had no effect on Lewis (who was himself in debt) and the sale went ahead in 1791. Dunain got half of Shipland and Sheriff-substitute Gilzean the other half. Gilzean acted for Mrs Alves who moved initially to another John Alves, the Duke of Buccleuch's Chamberlain, in Springfield Midlothian, before Archibald established her in George Street, Edinburgh.

Rev. Thomas Alves, then he was ordained 07/02/1819 at St Marylebone as 'lit.' [i.e. no tertiary education], the grandson of Dr John Alves of Shipland Inverness. Became Rector of St Dorothy in 1821 from the curacy of Trelawny following the death of the previous Rector R.B. Lawrence
homas Alves married Anna Smith, spinster of St James, by licence 01/04/1820 in Trelawny. She was probably the Anna Smith, daughter of Charles Smith and Barbara his wife, born 29/01/1799 and baptised 09/04/1799 in Trelawny. In October 1820, Thomas Alves performed the marriage ceremony in Trelawny for his sister Jane, who married William Dyer

(Research):Shipland was an estate acquired from Dr Alves's grandfather, Thomas. He was a merchant from Forres who later became Treasurer of Inverness some time before 1720

??? grandson of Dr John Alves of Shipland: Rev. Thomas Alves, then he was ordained 07/02/1819 at St Marylebone.as 'lit.' [i.e. no tertiary education], the grandson of Dr John Alves of Shipland Inverness. In 1840, the Rev. Thomas Alves was appointed the rector of St Dorothy, exchanging posts with the Rev. C.F. Hall, who took Alves' position as rector of Port Royal.
"Died December 1843 burial Dec 12 1843 Church Yard Spanish Town, St Catherine". Occupation Rector of St Dorothy, and also Chaplain House of Assembly. He is also listed as residing at time of death in Spanish Town.

    Notes:

    eldest surviving son

Alexander Baillie of Dunain married, 24th June, 1737, Anne, third daughter of Sir Archibald Campbell of Clunes, contract signed at Calder. There was this curious connection, Magdalen and Alexander Baillie, sister and brother, married Sir Archibald and Anne Campbell, father and daughter. Alexander Baillies marriage was a happy one, for, writing from Dunain, 5th March, 1738, he gleefully writes that he had come home with ?250 of tocher in his pocket, acknowledging at same time his thankfulness for " a good wife; " and in his letters to India to his sons, William and John, he refers most affectionately to their mother as his only comfort and support.

Alexander Baillie of Dunain took no part in the Rising of 1745, further than by doing what he could to succour quietly distressed Jacobites, and the shelter and nourishment afforded by the " Soul Mor" of Dunain was constantly spoken of in my younger days

Alexander Baillie had two sons, William, John, who succeeded his brother, and two daughters. The eldest, Anne, married her cousin, Dr George Baillie of Leys, and the youngest, Nellie, married, as his second wife, Dr John Alves of Shipland. The boys were educated at King's College, Aberdeen, under Principal Jack and Professor Leslie, letters from both, in the year 1756, being very complimentary to the young students.

Alexander married Anne Campbell on 24 Jun 1737. Anne (daughter of Sir Archibald (of Clunes) Campbell) was born before 1737; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  7. 15.  Anne Campbell was born before 1737 (daughter of Sir Archibald (of Clunes) Campbell); and died.

    Notes:
