Living in honorable retirement in Russellville is Aaron A. Graham, oneof Putnam County's highly respected and substantial citizens whoseformer life of activity resulted to much good to his fellow men aswell as to himself and immediate family. He was born in JacksonCounty, Indiana, May 22, 1844, son of James C. and Mary A.(Reynolds-Elkins) Graham, the former native of North Carolina and thelatter of Tennessee. In about 1854, they returned to the HoosierState, locating at Portland Mills, Putman County, where Mr. Grahamoperated a daily mail route from Waveland to Greencastle throughPortland Mills. They later lived in Brown Township, MontgomeryCounty, where Mrs. Graham died at the age of seventy-seven years. Hespent his last years in Iowa with his children, dying there when abouteighty years of age. They were the parents of but two sons, George F.and Aaron. However James C. Graham had been previously married andhad children by his first wife. / When only seventeen years of ageAaron Graham gave vent to patriotism he felt and enlisted in CompanyK, Sixty Seventh Regiment, Indiana Volunteer Infantry, from JacksonCounty, in August, 1862, and he served very faithfully through all thevicissitudes of his regiment, receiving an honorable discharge May 16,1865. He fought at Munfordville, Kentucky, Port Gibson, Black River,Champion Hills, and at Vicksburg, being wounded in the general assaultat the latter place May 22, 1863. A bullet passing through his lefthand. He was sent to Graysville and as soon as he was able he wasappointed ward master in the hospital there, which position heoccupied for nine months when he was ordered to Cincinnati as clerkunder General Willick, commander of the depot there, and thereremained until discharged. / After returning home Mr. Graham begantrading in and shipping stock at Russellville, his brother Georgebecoming his partner. In May 1867 they began buying land in BrownTownship, Montgomery County, one and one half miles from Russellvillestation, starting out with eighty acres. They made money rapidlyfarming and shipping from Russellville and Waveland, keeping wellposted in the daily market, shipping two hundred cars (by train) ofLivestock in one year. Mr. Graham was also accustom to buying horsesin large numbers, which he kept on his farm until ready for market. He prospered by his judicious handling of livestock and farming and hebecame the owner of five hundred and sixty acres of good land. Heowned four hundred acres in Montgomery County and one hundred andsixty acres in Parke County; paying as high as fifty-five dollars peracre for improved land: It consisted of the best black land, coveredwith walnut and sugar trees, but he always made farming secondary tohis livestock interests. However, he was known as a large wheatraiser and has sold as high as twenty-nine hundred dollars at oneshipping. He disposed of his stock interest ten years ago and sixyears ago he came to Russellville to make his home. / He has boughtand sold considerable town property. He has a beautiful modern home, elegantly furnished and here the many friends of the family delight togather. he also has modern and substantial buildings on his farm. His brother, George F., continued in the stock raising business allthe while and still owns his fine farm in Montgomery County. /Politically Mr. Graham is a Republication, but he has never had aninclination to hold public office, being content to look after hisindividual affairs and leave public matters to others. However, hehas always been deeply interested in the general welfare of hiscounty. He is a liberal supporter of the local Methodist church. /Mr. Graham, married Miranda Jones, of Montgomery County, whentwenty-two years old. She died ten years later. Two children wereborn to this union, Ida, who married Abe Grimes of Russellville, andGeorge F., who was but six days old when his mother died. Mr. Grahamssecond marriage was with Ardellie Hart of Putman, County, who aftertwenty-eight years of mutually happy married life, died in December,1901. The following children were graced this second union: Zonamarried Fred H. Goodwin, who is in business at Russellville: J. Blaineis associated with his father in the farming business: Everett L., noweleven years old is attending school. / Personally Mr. Graham is a manwhom it is a pleasure to know, being generous hearted, kind, hospitable, honest in all his dealings with his fellow man andeminently worthy of the trust and respect they repose in him and havefor him, and he is today regarded as one of the county's mostrepresentative and valued citizens."
