  1. 1.  William Kenneth Case was born on 17 Apr 1908 in Indian Orchard, Wayne Co., PA (son of John William Case and Minnie Charlotte Dexter); died on 24 Mar 1979 in Huntington, Cabell Co., WV; was buried in Woodmere Cemetery, Huntington, Cabell Co., WV.

    Notes:

Attended James Madison School, Scranton, PA

Bill was an excellent father, coached Little League for Fricke Pie which his son played for. He was a very good bowler maintaining an average of 200 for many years. He died shortly after his last visit to Jon Todd and Judy in Pleasant Hill, CA in 1977. Unfortunately, he never got to see his only grandchild, William Scott Case.

    From a Masonic Publication (c.1970-73):
    Sir Knight William Kenneth Case
    Grand Sentinel 1971-1972

William K. Case was born April 17, 1908 in Wayne County, PA, where he spent his early life on a farm. He moved to Scranton, PA, where he attended public schools and later the Wharton School of the University of PA. He spent a number of years in the banking and hotel auditing fields in Scranton and New York City before moving to Huntington, West VirGrand Isle Co.nia in 1940 where he became employed by the International Nickel Company as an Industrial EnGrand Isle Co.neer.

He served two years with the Armed Forces (U.S.EnGrand Isle Co.neers) in the European Theatre during WW II, and upon discharge returned to the above company, where he is presently employed as a cost analyst.

He is married to the former Marie Grand Isle Co.bson Minckler of New York City and they have one son, a data systems analyst at the University of California at Berkeley.

An active member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Huntington, he has served on many church committees and as an officer of the Episcopal Churchmen of that parish.

He was raised a Master Mason in Cabell Lodge No. 152, A.F. & A.M. in Huntington on March 9, 1949 and served as Master in 1953. exalted a Royal Arch Mason in Huntington Chapter No. 6 on May 12, 1950 and elected High Priest in 1954; created a Knight Templar on March 31, 1953 in Huntington Commandery No. 9, Knights Templar and served as Commander in 1961. He is presently serving as Captain General of that Commandery.

He is a member of Beni Kedem Temple, A.A.O.N.M.S. and Mountain State Priory No. 55, Knights of the York Cross of Honour.

He is an officer in the line of West VirGrand Isle Co.nia Conclave, Order of the Red Cross of Constantine, and serves as Grand Representative of the Grand Commandery of Knights Templar of Indiana to the Grand Commandery of West VirGrand Isle Co.nia.

He was appointed Grand Sentinel of the Grand Commandery of West VirGrand Isle Co.nia by Sir Knight Arthur M. Herndon, Right Eminent Grand Commander in May, 1971.

William married Marie Isobel Minckler on 2 Sep 1931 in Home Of Rev. Ernest A Smith, St. Johns Episcopal Church, Monticello, NY. Witnessed By Mary Alice Smith And Virginia A.J.Smith. Marie (daughter of Gibson Philemon Minckler and Marie Wilhelmina Kaiser) was born on 24 Dec 1911 in 350 Mott Ave, Bronx, NY; died on 25 Jan 2003 in Walnut Creek, Contra Costa Co., CA; was buried on 3 Feb 2003 in Woodmere Cemetery, Huntington, Cabell Co., WV. Generation: 2

  1. 2.  John William Case was born on 27 May 1890 in Welcome Lake, Pike Co., PA; was christened on 28 Apr 1910 (son of Amza M. Case and Louise Frances Buddenhagen); died on 7 Jul 1914 in Prompton, Wayne Co., PA; was buried on 10 Jul 1914 in Darling Cemetery, Indian Orchard, PA.

    Notes:

John and Minnie were founding members of Christ Episcopal Church, Indian Orchard, Wayne Co., PA. The records are now stored at Grace Episcopal Church in Honesdale. History of Christ Church dedication is in personal papers of Jon Case. It was built in 1911-1912.

John was listed in Grace Church Death record as B,C,C meaning he was baptized, confirmed, and a communicant of the church. His funeral service was held at Christ Church by the Rector Albert L. Whittaker. Believed to be buried at Christ Church cemetery but not proven.

In the 1910 census John and Minnie appear to be renting in Texas Twp. and most people on the same census page are involved in the glass business in one form or another. By 1920 John had died and I believe Minnie had moved to Scranton.

Ms. Wetmore while viewing tombstones in the Christ Church cemetery found an additional grave for:
    Madeline E. Case 1917-1961 husband Leonard J. Case 1915-1966.

John married Minnie Charlotte Dexter on 4 Mar 1909 in Atco, Wayne Co., PA. Minnie (daughter of Moses Herbert Dexter and Lenna Esther Randtel) was born on 5 Sep 1886 in Mast Hope, Pike Co., PA; was christened on 28 Apr 1910; died in Oct 1981 in Huntington, Cabell Co., WV; was buried in 1981 in Woodmere Cemetery, Huntington, Cabell Co., WV. 2. 3.  Minnie Charlotte Dexter was born on 5 Sep 1886 in Mast Hope, Pike Co., PA; was christened on 28 Apr 1910 (daughter of Moses Herbert Dexter and Lenna Esther Randtel); died in Oct 1981 in Huntington, Cabell Co., WV; was buried in 1981 in Woodmere Cemetery, Huntington, Cabell Co., WV.

    Notes:

Minnie, George, and Elmer Dexter attended Atco School. Class photo in possession of Jon T. Case.

Baptised the same day as John W. Case.

Minnie lived many years at 403 W.22nd St., Manhattan, in New York before moving to Scranton PA and then to Huntington, WV to live with her sons. She resided with Max Jacoby in both NY and Scranton.

Her delayed birth certificate issued June 15, 1948 was interestingly signed by Sydney Dexter, Notary Public, Narrowsburg, NY. The midwife at her birth was Sarah Bordine, deceased (in 1948).

Minnie's downstairs neighbor and good friend in NY was Trudy Rosario, 345 8th Ave., Apt. 1B NY 10017.

    Notes:

    Married:
Emily Hallock found in the Methodist Church Records: John W. Case a resident of Eldred, NY married Minnie Dexter also of Eldred, NY on March 3, 1909 by Rev. Walter Walker. This would be in Tustin VR.

    Children:
    1. 1. William Kenneth Case was born on 17 Apr 1908 in Indian Orchard, Wayne Co., PA; died on 24 Mar 1979 in Huntington, Cabell Co., WV; was buried in Woodmere Cemetery, Huntington, Cabell Co., WV.

    3. Harold Laverne Case was born on 1 Apr 1911 in Indian Orchard School House, Wayne Co., PA; died in Nov 1977 in Olyphant, Lackawanna Co., PA.

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  Amza M. Case was born about 5 Apr 1854 in Welcome Lake, Pike Co., PA (son of Warren Leonard Case and Elizabeth Sherwood); died between 1900 and 1910 in Indian Orchard, Wayne Co., PA.

    Notes:

Likely lived in Welcome Lake when John William was born in 1890. Probably born in Damascus, Wayne Co., PA since that is where Warren was in 1850.

By the 1910 census Amza was dead and Louise, his widow, is living with her son John and his wife Minnie in Texas Twp. where it appears, John William was renting. William K is 1 1/2 years old and living with them.

in 15 Sept 1892 column of Lake View (I have no idea where that is) Mr and Mrs Herbert Branning spent Sunday with Mr and Mrs Amzy Case at Indian Orchard.

from 6 Feb 1908 "Along the Delaware" column--Amasa Case, who spent all his early life near here, was killed in a stone quarry near Mast Hope on 16 Jan. A very heavy stone fell on him and he died a few hours after. He was 52 years old and is survived by his wife and three sons. (Sent by Emily Hallock).

Amza married Louise Frances Buddenhagen after 1880. Louise (daughter of John Buddenhagen and Thressa) was born in Apr 1860 in Pennsylvania; died after 1910 in Indian Orchard, Wayne Co., PA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 5.  Louise Frances Buddenhagen was born in Apr 1860 in Pennsylvania (daughter of John Buddenhagen and Thressa); died after 1910 in Indian Orchard, Wayne Co., PA.

    Notes:

Minnie Case took care of Louise in her later days. Marie Case related that Minnie thought Louise had been married 3 times.

The Buddenhagens from Germany seem to have spread out to Monticello and Narrowsburg, Sullivan Co., Port Jervis, and Welcome Lake, Pike Co., as well as Lackawaxen.

From the Honesdale Citizen (June 2, 1904):

Warren L. Case, a well-known and much respected citizen and a life-long resident of Damascus township, died at the residence of Herbert Branning, in Berlin, on Sunday last, May 29th, 1904, aged 81 years and 6 months. Mr. Case having made a business trip to the Beach Lake creamery, on Friday, was on his way home, when, stopping for a friendly call at Mr. Branning's he was persuaded to spend the night. He retired to his room and toward morning his moans attracted the attention of the family, and he was found to be very ill, suffering from some internal ailment which the domestic appliances at hand failed to relieve. A physician was summoned in the morning, but the patient was found to be beyond help, and passed away shortly before 8 o'clock on Sunday evening. The deceased was born in Tusten, Sullivan County, N.Y., but from early manhood was a resident of Damascus township, this county, where he became prominent as a lumberman and noted as a Delaware river steersman. In 1846 Mr. Case married Miss Lura Dexter, who died a year later. He took as his second wife Miss Elizabeth Sherwood, a native of Connecticut, who died some years since, leaving a large family of children. The survivors are five sons: A.M., of Indian Orchard; Ezra A., Judson C., and Virgil B., of East Berlin; and George A., of Narrowsburg, and two daughters, Mrs. Mary Skinner, of White Mills, and Mrs. Annie L. Cassidy, of Jersey City.

    Henry Case (1830) p.020
    Joshua Case (1830) p. 019 Looks promising.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
Emily Hallock's correspondence and transcription of the 1910 census for Tusten shows Warren's son George age 40 with both parents born in PA.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
Candy Graser of Buffalo, NY wrote me on 2/10/2000 about Warren P. Case of Cowlesville, Wyoming Co., NY. She mentioned letters in her possession from PA to her Aunt Betsy about Judson from Mary Case and also about "the twins". Her tree was as follows:
Pelatiah Case m. Apphia Loomis b. 1/18/1771, d.1851 in Windsor, CN. They moved to Cowlesville and their children were: Pelatiah Jr., Appia, Chauncey, Aurelia, and Martin (1807-1893).
Martin m. Lucinda Sprague (1809-1879) and second, Caroline S. Rowley. Children were: Amelia Loomis, Warren P., Lucy Hart, Loretta Pear, and Harlow Case.
She said Harlow was a farmer, businessman, and drummer (peddler). He and Warren sold shoe polish by traveling west for orders. She has letters from both men and family Bibles.
Warren was apparently a difficult man to live with and was married 3 times.
Since Candy was doing this from memory I believe she had her Warren Cases mixed up but there is a likely connection here.

    Soundex for Case is C200.

Ms. Sharon Freeman, GenealoGrand Isle Co.cal Research Society of Northeastern Pennsylvania, looked up 1870 census information for me and found Warren and Lura married with names of children. POB 1, Olyphant, PA 18447-0001. Phone (717)383-7466. searcher@microserve.net.
Warren was found on the same 1870 census page as George Dexter, Moses father, and likely related to Laura Dexter.

The 1870 Census data was not very leGrand Isle Co.ble but indicated a son of Warren - Amsa? Also Elam who was on the 1850 census looks like Ezra on the 1870 census. The 1850 census indicated no wife. Roll 1464, p.108

Ms. Agnes Wetmore, HCR-1, Box 1026, Tafton, PA 18464 visited Christ Episcopal, Indian Orchard, and Grace Episcopal, Honesdale, Churches, and sent me copies of baptismal, confirmation, and headstone information on Warren and Lura, Amiah, and John William. Email agnes10@ptd.net. At the cemetery she also found a headstone for Madeline E. Case b.1917 d.1961 m. Leonard J. Case b.1915 d.1966. Other Case Family lots were: E.A.Case, Marsh,William,Ferrington, Russell, and Ruth. Dexter lots were: John, Lewis, Rosetta, and Albert.

1850 Census, Damascus, Wayne Co. lists only Warren Case age 25, oriGrand Isle Co.n NY, and Elam Case, born PA age 2, viewed scanned record at

    Notes:

1860 Census shows Warren in Damascus page 197. Also a Chauncy Case and Lucy Sherwood on the same page. Albert Sherwood on p. 196 just prior to Rachel. There is an E. Case listed as living with Rachel, age 25. There is no E. Case listed with Warren who could have been his wife. She may have been staying with her parents at the time. In 1870, no wife is listed for Warren.

The Tustin census of 1910 showed George Case born in PA with both parents born in PA. This is their son, George.
    ------------------------------------------------
From "Lenore H. Geller" transcribed from her mother's notes:

    Wood and Sherwood Families

(Information given to Grace Hayes Jones in 1922 by her grandmother, Jane Sherwood Dexter. She was baptized Priscilla Jane but changed it to Jane P. Dexter.)

When Thomas Wood, father of Polly Burr Wood was 5 years old, he lived in Fairfield, Co., Conn. and during the Revolutionary War, or about that time, he remembered the soldiers passing through the country, burning the houses as they went. They were perhaps Red Coats.

It has been told that there was an English estate (whether on the Sherwood or Wood side is uncertain) but lawyers got most if not all of it.

Both the Wood and Sherwood families lived in Fairfield County, Conn. The older children of Albert Sherwood were born in Conn. but the younger ones, after they moved to Wayne County, for their daughter Jane was born there in 1834

Jane's sister Elizabeth (Lib) was married when only 13. (Census records later proved she was 14 or 15.) She and Jane went to a party one night. Their mother said to Jane, "Look after Lib." But Lib slipped out with Warren Case, a widower, and crossing the Delaware River into New York, they were married. A license was not required in that state then, though it was in Penn. Warren had been married to Lura Dexter, Virgil Dexter's older sister but she had died. (Elam Case was Lura and Warren's son.)

After giving birth to 15 children, one right after the other and about a year apart, Aunt Lib died. Then Warren married Aunt Maria, who was an excellent mother to the big family. This is the story that has been told: One evening Warren brought in two big pails full of warm fresh milk, and set them on the kitchen floor to be strained and the milk to be put away. After a little while in he came to find two full pails of milk sitting in the same spot. Thinking his wife was neglectful, he poured the milk right on the floor. Aunt Maria promptly picked up a chair and just about smashed it over his head. After that he respected her as he never had the first two wives. The milk he had so angrily dumped on the floor was sour milk for the pigs. (Nettie Dexter Hayes used to talk about Aunt Maria's rye bread - how good it was. When Mother was a little girl she loved to go back to Wayne Co. PA to visit Aunts, uncles and many cousins.)

    Notes:

    Married:

John + Thressa. was born about 1836 in Brownsive; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  4. 11.  Thressa was born about 1836 in Brownsive; and died.

    Notes:

The 1880 census states both parents born in Brown.

    Children:
    1. 5. Louise Frances Buddenhagen was born in Apr 1860 in Pennsylvania; died after 1910 in Indian Orchard, Wayne Co., PA.
    2. Augusta Buddenhagen was born about 1861 in Pennsylvania; and died.

    7. Willie Buddenhagen was born about 1875 in Pennsylvania; and died.
    8. Annie Buddenhagen was born about 1877 in Pennsylvania; and died.

  5. 12.  George Dexter was born on 30 Sep 1832 in Pennsylvania (son of Jonathan Dexter, III and Jennette Seymour); died on 22 Apr 1908; was buried in Glen Cove Cemetery, Narrowsburg, NY.

    Notes:

According to Dexters of the Delaware Valley by Eldred and Popliarz George was the son of Jonathan and Jennett (Seymour) Dexter born 9/30/1832 d. 4/22/1908. He was called "Maumee" after a river in Ohio.

1870 census shows George Dexter in Damascus at age 37 Roll 1464, p.108. It also shows a George Dexter m. to "Mercy" (I have seen the name Mercy Skinner in genealogy lists several times.)

Dexter name meant a dyer in Old English.

Marie Case's notes showed George possibly married to Emma Skinner. It is thought she may have been related to the Canfields - could they have meant the Calkins? She recalled the name Ida Blake Calkins as being in the family tree somewhere.

The 1860 census shows a George Dexter, age 25, living in Damascus next door to Moses Calkins.

LDS Ancestral file 4.17 lists a George W. Dexter b. 1839 Wayne Co., PA m. Helen Skinner b. 8/23/1843 in Wayne Co., PA. Helen was the daughter of Albro Skinner, son of Nathan Skinner and Sarah Calkins. Sarah d. 1854 in Cochecton, Sullivan Co., NY. Many notes on the Skinner family who were early pioneers of the Delaware valley.

Dave Skinner of Tallahassee, FL, skinnerd@gossimer.nettally.com, is researching Helen above. Their children were Albro, Richard R., Mary Celestia, and Georgia Dexter. From "The Skinner Kinsmen" by Mrs. Gordon Wahl. She lists as a reference Mrs. R.R.Beegle of Middletown, NY. This line is carried down to George and Helen's son Albro, to Melvin L. Dexter and Robert M. Dexter.

There is likely a relationship of George to Warren Case's wife, Lura Dexter from Damascus, Wayne Co., PA but not yet proven. Warren and George appear on the same 1870 census page.

1850 Census shows Jonathan Dexter with a son, George age 19. Jonathan was 49 at the time.

The Glen Cove Cemetery listing shows:
    George Dexter 9/30/1832 - 4/22/1908
    his wife Augusta 8/21/1841 - June 4, 1915
    their son Fred O. Dexter 1/23/1880 - Mar 18, 1904

George married Mercy (Emma) Skinner on 8 Jan 1859. Mercy was born about 1843; died before 1876. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  6. 13.  Mercy (Emma) Skinner was born about 1843; died before 1876.

    Notes:

According to Minnie Dexter, Emma was related to the Canfields.

    Children:
    1. 6. Moses Herbert Dexter was born on 9 Jul 1863 in Branningville Or Damascus, Wayne Co., PA; died on 15 Mar 1936 in Scranton, Lackawanna Co., PA; was buried in 1936 in Glen Cove Cemetery, Narrowsburg, NY..
    2. Emma C. Dexter was born about 1869; and died.

  7. 14.  Charles G. Randtel was born on 3 Feb 1831 (son of Grandmother Randtel); died on 22 Jun 1914; was buried in 1914 in Glen Cove Cemetery, Narrowsburg, Sullivan Co., NY.

    Notes:

The Glen Cove listing also shows possible other children:
    William Randtel 1868 - 1882
    Charles A Randtel 1870 - 1882
    Gertie M Randtel 1873 - 1882

Charles + Charlotte S.. Charlotte was born about 13 Apr 1836; died on 22 Aug 1902; was buried in 1902 in Glen Cove Cemetery, Narrowsburg, Sullivan Co., NY. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  8. 15.  Charlotte S. was born about 13 Apr 1836; died on 22 Aug 1902; was buried in 1902 in Glen Cove Cemetery, Narrowsburg, Sullivan Co., NY.

    Notes:

From an old photo in posession of Todd Case: "This is Lenna Dexter Grandmother Randtel who came from Germany after my father died."
It is assumed Minnie Dexter wrote this note. "She lived in Buffalo, NY with cousins." I don't know whether this was Charlotte or her Mother-in-law. The photo is stamped on the reverse: "From People's Gallery, 191 E. Seneca Street, Same side as Southern Hotel, Buffalo, NY."

Birthdate and Death based on In Memoriam cards printed when she died. (Is this Lenna or Charlotte?) One card to Mrs. Charles Randall died 8/28/1902, the other to Mrs. Charlotte S. Randtel d. 8/22/1902. Don't know why this discrepancy.

Charlotte S. came to the US from Germany after Lenna.

    Children:
    1. Minnie A. Randall was born in 1864 in Prob. Damascus, Wayne Co., PA; died in 1949; was buried in 1949 in Glen Cove Cemetery, Narrowsburg, Sullivan Co., NY.
    2. 7. Lenna Esther Randtel was born on 16 Sep 1866 in Atco (Branningville), Wayne Co., PA; died on 25 Sep 1940 in Home Of Minnie Dexter Case/Scranton, Lackawanna Co., PA; was buried in 1940 in Glen Cove Cemetery, Narrowsburg, NY.
