Many descendants of these children still live in the Warren county area today. He continued farming and disposing of his property in Virginia until his death on 26 Oct 1887 at his home on Lost Creek. where he is buried in the family cemetery. He was a member of the Christian Church.

William bought out his siblings in 1857 and from then on he owned the Lost Creek Farm outright. Each sibling owned 20% for which he paid them $60.00 each. Shortly after that his brother, James J. Douglas, and his wife disappeared in Henderson county, Kentucky.
