    Supposed inscriptions from a bible - c.1870
Footnote: There is obviously more information in this Family Bible. The seller at Ebay, did not give all family information. This is all that was given.

Handwritten inscription (ink, faded with age) and dedication from Erskine and Sophia Douglas to their daughter Laura and John Atwood (son-in-law?) is found on front flyleaf.
    The inscription reads:
    Our Children
    Laura and John Atwood.
With God's Blessing and our ...text is illegible...
    Erskine and Sophia Douglas
    Bellefontaine Ohio December 25th 1873

Six sheets of ruled paper were taped behind one illustrated middle page. The beautiful penmanship is apparently from the hand of Erskine Douglas.
    The last paragraph was signed:
    "April 1856. Erskine Douglas"

    Extracted from the handwritten pages:
Two Brothers, "William" & "Robert Douglas" emigrated to the newworld in the second voyage of the "Mayflower". (Robert Douglas remained at Plymouth Mass, a few years ago the writer examined a list of voters of that town and found about one fourth were of the name Douglas, no doubt they were his descendants.

Ancestors of Captain Richard Douglas of the Revolutionary Army.
First. William Douglas, died July 26. 1682. He was Ipswitch N. England, 1641, of Boston 1645, made Freeman of Massachusetts 1646, of N. London CT. Dec. 1659, He was born in 1610, his wife was about the same age, her maiden name was Ann Maltte - she was the daughter Thomas and sister of Robert Maltte of Berigstead in Northamptonshire, England - both of whom died before 1670, leaving property to which she was ...illegible text... heir - Family tradition says he was buried near the large tree which was used as a place of interment by the first settlers of N. London, CT.

Third. Capt. Rich Douglas. died Feby 26th 1734/35 in the 53 d. year of his age.
The farm known as the Robt. Douglas farm - also the Wm Douglas farm - lately occupied by Danl. Douglas have never been out of the possession of the Douglas family since they were first purchased of the Indians. The house on the Wm. Douglas farm is this year 1875 223 years old

Richard Douglas one of the Pilgrims, who came over to Plymouth with his wife and children, and who was subsequently removed to New London CT. was the Grand Father of Wm Douglas first decon and for life of the Old Presbyterian church, which stood near to the Powder House and has been in ruins more than a half a century - this deacon Wm Douglas had a son William. who was also a Deacon in the same church and this Wm Douglas, who died Nov. 13. 1787 old style, was the Father of Capt. Richd Douglas of the fifth Connecticut Regiment of the Continental Army whose commision as Capt. bears date 1781. His commission as Ensign bears date June 20, 1776. and as first Lieutenant of the Connecticut Regiment is dated March 16.1779.
He was a volunteer to the Battle of Bunker Hill and fought bravely on that and many subsequent battles. He was a prisoner for more than a year to the British, and was confined on board a ..illegible text... on prison ship at Brooklyn opposite New York.
On the 30 Dec. 1797 he was appointed Postmaster at New London CT. which office he held until his decease March 1. 1816

The Mayflower returned to England in May 1621 and had fallen into disrepair by may 1624, so any '2nd voyage' would have to taken place between those dates. In1629, a ship called the Mayflower made a voyage from London to Plymouth Colony carrying thirty-five passengers, many from Leiden. This was not the same ship that made the original voyage with the first settlers. This voyage began in May and reached Plymouth in August.

NOTE: For some time, I showed william's father as 'Robert of Scotland' and Jean Ross, however this would appear to be disproved by DNA testing.

William, Anne, Anne Jr. and Robert sailed for America a year after Robert was born.

The two parishes where the three children were baptized were Church of England parishes. This is significant as it seems William was a Puritan, with Calvinistic roots

    Birth:
Some say born 'Castle Douglas, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland'
Castle Douglas was founded in 1792 - it was not there in 1610. Perhaps they are thinking Douglas castle, in Lanarkshire.
However, it is unlikley that he was of that family.

    Christened:
I have seen no evidence that he was baptised in Glasgow, but some accounts report that on 8 Sep 1611

William married Anne Motley (Mattle Mottle) in 1636 in Ringstead, Northamptonshire, England. Anne was born in 1610 in Ringstead, Northamptonshire, England; died on 16 Sep 1691 in New London, New London, CT. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 3.  Anne Motley (Mattle Mottle) was born in 1610 in Ringstead, Northamptonshire, England; died on 16 Sep 1691 in New London, New London, CT.

    Notes:

from Edward F. Douglass on 7/14/2004
"It is reported -- again, without documentation -- that William married Anne Motley (a genealogist determined that this was her family name, rather than "Mattle.") in Ringstead in Northamptonshire. I have a copy of the Will of Anne's Father."

A Thomas Mattle was born in Ringstead, England 1575. Thomas died: 22 Jan 1611/12 Ringstead, Northampton, England
. I am unsure if this is the same as is referred to above.

It is possible his father was Robert Mattle, Birth : 1545 Ringstead, Northampton, England

There are parish baptism records for two older brothers in Ringstead, Northanptonshire

    Notes:

    Married:
I also have a note saying they married in Scotland on 26 Jul 1636
