    Records indicate that Stephen Jr. moved to Montgomery County, Indiana sometime in 1816.

    Among the many old settlers in this locality, we will name old Uncle Stephen Riddle, Grandfather Wiliam Carter, Jesse Rainbolt, Rev. Thomas Gliphant, Rev. George Bursh, William Brummet, Edmond and Frederick Dingham, Isaac, John and Joseph Storms, Wiliam Cole, William and Brock Stone, Joe and Enoch Sheiton, Herden Warren, Beverly Bays Etc.......
    Old Uncle Stephen Riddle was born in Gifford county, North Carolina, and was married to Miss Mary Quiett, and they came to Greene county in the year 1818, and settled land, made the farm and set out the old orchard at the place where James Combs now lives. Mr. Riddle and wife had twelve children. The old man died at the age of seventy one years, and was buried at the old Storm Cemetery. The first murder in Greene County was committed at the house of Uncle Stephen Riddle.

    Stephen married Mary Polly Quaite on 26 Dec 1799 in Guilford Co., North Carolina. Mary was born on 15 Jan 1787 in Guilford Co., North Carolina; died in Greene County, Indiana, USA; was buried in Greene County, Indiana, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

    The well known Riddle researcher Doratha Riddle Marsh gives Stephen Riddle the credit for being the first Riddle in North Carolina which was prior to 1757. Riddle's Ferry was located on the Yadkin River near what is now Clemmons, North Carolina, 12 miles south of Salem.

    The ferry remained in the family until sold by Stephen's son Benjamin Riddle to Thomas Oakes in 1824. Benjamin and his family then moved to Hardeman Co., Tennessee.
    Stephen's father was Benjamin Riddle (1703-1750) son of John Riddle (1680-1745) and Elizabeth Bowman. Stephen had three brothers, Zachariah, John, and Benjamin II.
    Zachariah moved to Virginia and later to Orange Co., North Carolina.

    Stephen married Nancy Elizabeth Douhit about 1760 in Monacacy, Frederick Co., Maryland. Nancy was born on 22 Apr 1739 in Monocacy, Frederick Co., Maryland; died between 1791 and 1792 in Rowan Co., North Carolina. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Sep. 10, 1717 Maryland State Archives CR49-521,1739-1743, Page 469-471. John (Ridle) Riddle Prince George's County, Maryland petition agent of management of Land Affairs within Province of Maryland paid fee for 50 acres of land called Poplar Thickett. Hugh Riley had already been granted 100 acres of the Original Poplar Thickett under New Rent by Sundry Median Conveyances Alienation and Mutations of Possession Act. This petition was sent to London.

    Dec. 15, 1738. London still had John Riddle's petition on file and his fee. They resurveyed and found vacant land. John Riddle and his heirs were given 63-1/2 acres on May 17, 1745. The Addition to Poplar Thickett and additional land. Son John Jr. owned this property until his death in 1794. Son Zachariah, administrator sold this property in 1795.

    Note Hugh Riley was given 100 acres of Poplar Thickett under The New Rent Act.
    18 Oct. 1716 Hugh Riley and wife Rebecca sold 100 acres of Poplar Thickett to John Prather Jr. and Thomas Prather. the property was at the north end of Friendship Manor of Calverton.
    Index 55, Drawer 3, 9 Sep. 10, 1717, John Riddle bought from John Prother 50 acres which was part of Poplar Thickett.
    John B.1680's now owns 2 tracts of land. 63-1/2 acres of The Addition to Poplar Thickett and 50 acres of Poplar Thickett.

    John married Elizabeth Bowman on 2 Sep 1700 in Prince George's Co., Maryland. Elizabeth was born about 1683 in Prince George's Co., Maryland; died about 1720 in Prince George's Co., Maryland. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
