Elijah Grooms is the oldest living "Grooms" listed out of threefamilies for Fentress County, Tennessee's 1850 Federal U.S. Census. He is either the father or great uncle probably of John S. Grooms, because of his age and possible marriage date given the 20 year ruleor earlier. Elijah's birth year also fits the years that the elderJohn Abraham Grooms was having children in Adams County, Ohio wherethe family is believed to have originated from.
It is also uncertain as to the route that was taken by John AbrahamGrooms when he traveled to Ohio from Virginia. If he did take theroute of the Cumberland Pass, as did many other settlers, then hewould have passed from Virginia, through Tennessee, through Kentuckyas well. This would explain the place of Elijah's birth then. Itwould seem that Elijah must not have been too sure of where he wasborn since in one census year he has stated he was born in Kentuckyand then in another that he was born in Tennessee. Interesting.
There is a problem that arises with Elijah's wife, notably Eliza'sbirth year; This could possibly be a second marriage, because eventhe age of James and Thomas would have made Eliza in her early teenswhen they were born. Much, much more research needs to be done onthis family. 18 August 2006, SLJuhl, compiler.

Excerpts From Letter: "The Grooms originally came from Adams CountyOhio. They moved to Fentress County Tennessee. To go into the timberbusiness some time in the 1800's." post marked March 11, 2004 fromUncle Bill Grooms to Bill Wethington. Original kept in familyWethington records.

It is only circumspect as to whom John S. Grooms, William Grooms, andJames Grooms's of Casey County, Kentucky's true father is. The oldestknown Grooms in Adams County, Ohio is John Abraham Grooms. All of thebirth dates and marriage years fit in sequence, however other thancensus records and a few marriage records this is all of the sourcesgathered so far. So, it cannot be said with a certainity that thefamily line is as it's listed in this register report. The report canonly be used as a guide for further research at this point in time.
There is a son James listed with Elijah Grooms from Fentress County,Tennessee in the 1850 census that would fit the age of James Groomsof Casey County, Kentucky in the 1870 census. Since it is known thatthe family migrated from Fentress County, Tennessee to Casey County,Kentucky in or about 1845-1850, it is certainly possible that they areone in the same family if used cautiously. There is also the youngestson in the census of Mock Grooms who was born in Kentucky, while inthe same year the family also lived in Fentess County, Tennesseeduring the census time in August of 1850. This would suggest that theGrooms in Fentress County, Tennessee did travel from that county toKentucky. With some of the family being born in Tennessee, Kentucky, and Ohio it would at least put the families in those areas at rightabout the same time frame that has been suggested by direct familymembers. 18 August 2006, SLJuhl, compiler.

Elijah married Eliza between 1838 and 1841 in Possibly 2ND Marriage In Either Tennessee Or Kentucky. was born in 1821 in Tennessee, USA; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Children:

    2. William Grooms was born in 1841 in Kentucky, USA; and died.

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  John Abraham Grooms was born in 1773 in Berkeley County, Virginia, USA (son of Abraham Ser. Grooms and Margaret Satterfield); died on 15 Sep 1860 in Tiffin Township, Adams County, Ohio.

    Notes:

Marriage, birth, census records obtained from www.Ancestry.com website.
There are nine families living next to each other in Tiffin Township,Adams County, Ohio in the 30th August 1850 Census record who are mostcertainly all related to each other. Several are widowed or widower'swith children as well. Plus, in the same census year in FentressCounty, Tennessee there are several families living together who arecertainly related to each other as well as to John Abraham Grooms inAdams County, Ohio with the rest of the families. It is a sad thingthat earlier census records only listed the head of the house hold.It does prevent us from knowing how they all are related in the familydynamics through the census records.

From the early marriage records in Virginia three marriages are listedfor John Grooms. I can only verify two of the marriages as listed, because of the Children's ages and the vicinity of where they livedrelative to John Abraham Grooms in the census records. The marriagethat cannot be confirmed as yet is to a Mary Foye, 30 June 1797 inBerkeley County, Virginia for a very short duration since Johnremarries again in 1800 to Nancy.

John may have had several children that we are unaware of at thispoint.

In tracing the families, Abraham Grooms Senior must have been inVirginia in and around 1770, since that is when he married and startedto have children born there in Virginia. A lot more research needs tobe done as yet in Maryland as well as Virginia to actually discoverthe families ancestral roots.

It is indicated from the early Ohio Census records (see below) thatAbraham Grooms was living in Adams County, Ohio as early as 1807.

Abraham Grooms (80-90 years old) is in the 1830 Federal Census inTiffin Township, Adams County, Ohio living next to Zachariah (40-50years old), Mahlon Grooms (20-30 years old), Abraham Grooms (30-40years old), and John Grooms (50-60 years old) along with theirfamilies at the time of the census. Abraham is not married at thetime. So, it is assumed that his wife has died previously to thecensus since there are no older females near his age living with anyof the sons listed. Richard Grooms (40-50 years old) is listed livingin Franklin Township, Adams County, Ohio with his wife (same age) andfamily. Zachariah Grooms (20-30 years old) is listed directly underWilliam Grooms (50-60 years old) also in Tiffin Township, Adams Countyvery near the other Grooms. They are no doubt all one family unitwith Abraham Grooms Senior (80-90 y/o) as the eldest. Source:www.Ancestry.com; Roll 126, pages 11/11, 5/12, and 35/42.

Abraham Grooms (80-90 years old) is not in the 1840 Census with therest of the family in Adams County, Ohio. It is assumed that he haddied between the two census years of 1830-1840.

A possible Ancestor, but unknown exact relationship to the family is:PAGE 128, STATE OF VIRGINIA, CENSUS OF PENSIONERS, MARYLAND, AND THEEASTERN DISTRICT OF VIRGINIA; NAMES OF PENSIONERS FOR REVOLUTIONARY ORMILITARY SERVICES; BEDFORD COUNTY, VIRGINIA--01 JUNE 1840.
    Listed:
"Jonathan Grooms, 84 years old, living with Reuben Atkinson." **OnlyGrooms listed for a pension per Ohio-Tennessee-Kentucky Records on theInternet site www.Ancestry.com. There is only one Grooms listed inVirginia for the year 1840 Federal Census Record, and that is thisJonathan Grooms living with Reuben Atkinson. There are no censusrecords listed in those three states mentioned ofOhio-Tennessee-Kentucky for a Jonathan Grooms; nor in Maryland for theyears 1830-1880. More research is required and tax records need to bechecked as yet before a definite connection can be established forthis Jonathan Grooms as an ancestor of John S. Grooms ofTennessee/Kentucky. It's difficult to determine the actual previousresidence of Jonathan Grooms, because when his name is entered for thestates mentioned, this Revolutionary War Pension record pops up foreach state without any census records. I researched onwww.Ancestry.com to find the 1840 census record to verify JonathanGrooms living with Reuben Atkinson. But did not come up with muchmore on Jonathan Grooms after 1840-1841. As mentioned, a lot ofresearch needs to be done as yet. A couple of scenarios are possible: 1). This could be the original, "Grooms" for this family in America,2). Could be John S. Grooms great-grandfather, 3). Or not related,etc.... [SLJuhl, compiler, 18 August 2006]

NOTE: The last mention of Jonathan Grooms in records presentlycompiled is the years c.1840 A.D. in the Eastern District of Virginia,Bedford County, per the Revolutionary War pension records filed. Hisage is listed as 84 years in 1840. In the 1840 Federal Census recordshe was living with Reuben Atkinson in the Southern District ofVirginia, Bedford County listed as a veteran. Jonathan could not befound in the 1850 Federal Census records in any state.

It was noted that several families with the surname of, "Atkinson,Adhison" two men named Will (an older and younger - TN) and anothernamed Alex (KY), lived right next to Elijah & Eliza Grooms (probablegrandson), Dist. 7, Fentress County, Tennessee, and were listed on thesame census sheet for 2nd of October 1850, all of them and theirfamilies together. Quite a coincidence.
