  1. 1.  Sir Simon Ramsay, 16th Earl of Dalhousie was born on 17 Oct 1914; died on 15 Jul 1999.

    Notes:

    1 - Sir Simon Ramsay, 16th Earl of Dalhousie was educated at Eton College, & Christ Church College, Oxford University. He gained the rank of Major in the service of the 4/5th Battalion, Black Watch (Territorial Army). He fought in the Second World War, where he became a POW. He was decorated with the Military Cross (M.C.) in 1944. He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Conservative) for Forfar between 1945 and 1950 where he was Chief Whip of the House of Commons between 1946 and 1948. He succeeded to the title of 16th Lord Ramsay of Carrington [S., 1633], 5th Baron Ramsay of Glenmark, co. Forfar [U.K., 1875], 17th Lord Ramsay of Dalhousie [S., 1619] & 16th Earl of Dalhousie, co. Midlothian [S., 1633] on 3 May 1950. He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Angus in 1951 and was invested as a Knight Grand Cross, Order of the British Empire (G.B.E.) & an Officer, Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem (O.St.J.) in 1957. He held the office of Governor-General of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland between 1957 and 1963. He was decorated with the Knight Commander, Commandery of Central Africa. He held the office of Lord Chamberlain to HM Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother between 1965 and 1992. He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Angus in 1967. He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Angus between 1967 and 1989. He was invested as a Knight, Order of the Thistle (K.T.) in 1971. He held the office of Chancellor of Dundee University between 1977 and 1992. He was invested as a Knight Grand Cross, Royal Victorian Order (G.C.V.O.) in 1978.

    2 - The sixteenth Earl was a Conservative Member of Parliament before succeeding in the earldom and later served as Governor-General of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland . As of 2008 the titles are held by his eldest son, the sevnteenth Earl, who succeeded in 1999. Lord Dalhousie is Chief of Clan Ramsay .

    Simon married Margaret Elizabeth Mary Stirling, M.P., D.L., J.P. on 26 Jun 1940. Margaret (daughter of Brig.-Gen. Archibald Stirling and Margaret Mary Fraser) was born on 4 Jul 1914; died on 9 Feb 1997. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
