  1. 4.  Joseph "Running Joe" Hodgins was born on 14 Apr 1864 in Lucan, Ontario (son of "Long" John Hodgins and Isabella Sceli); died on 7 Jan 1944 in Merville, Vancouver Island, BC; was buried in St. Andrews, Courtenay, Vancouver Island, BC.

    Notes:

    Home in Merville struck bylightning and burned to ground in 1940.

    Family was the only one to preserve their home during the forest fire of 1922.

    In 1921 moved to Merville, in the Comox Valley, Vancouver Island, BC.

    Moved to Metchosin, Vancouver Island, BC, in 1910.

    In 1901 he moved near Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, with brother Tom.

    Settled and married in Nebraska, but after a prarie fire in 1899 he returned to Ontario with wife and child.

    Named "Running Joe" because he ran away from home at age 13 and 16. Disliked school.

    Joseph married Grace Anna Davis on 18 Nov 1897 in Cedar County, Nebraska. Grace was born on 20 Jun 1880 in Iowa, USA; died on 7 Oct 1964. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

    Took over Lucan-London stage after the "Black Donnelly Massacre".

    Big man, known throughout the community as one of the strongest men in Biddulph.

    Long John was the first white child born in that area of Ontario.

    "Long" married Isabella Sceli in 1860. Isabella (daughter of Joseph Scilly and Isabella Hodgins) was born in Sep 1839 in Biddulph, Ontario; died on 2 Dec 1904 in Biddulph, Ontario; was buried in St. James Anglican, Clandeboye, Mdsx, Biddulph, Ontario. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    According to Grace Hodgins, Isabella was "the grandest person to know; such a stately lady, good and kind".
