It is seldom in this land of roaming tendencies that the children andchildren's children remain in or near the same place till the bloodrelatives number nearly a hundred, yet the Penney reunion at Stacyville,May 29, brought together nearly that number. This occasion was thesixtieth anniversary of the birthday of Arthur, the oldest living son ofthe second generation.

The father, William Penney, from which sprung this numerous family, wasborn Jly 4, 1793 at Owermoine, in Dorcetshire, where he lived on a dairyfarm till 1845. As a part of his father's business at this time was tosupply the king's household with milk and butter while at his summercastle, William was often sent to carry these articles, and so saw KingGeorge, the oppressor of America, many times. Mr. Penney was quick andenergetic in both body and mind. A busy man himself he brought up hischildren in the same habits of industry.

At the age of twenty-two he married Elizabeth Garland, a woman ofremarkable disposition and temperament. Mild yet firm, her childrenobeyed, probably from love, yet never heard from her a cross or impatientutterance. She was strong in body, active in mind and pleasant indisposition. She worked hard and certainly did her part toward bringingup a large family to habits of honest industry. The result of this unionwas twelve boys and two girls. Seven of the boys and one of the girlsare yet living, and all in or near Stacyville.

In 1844 the two sons, Robert and Arthur, came to America to view thecountry and determine whether it was suited for a home for their parentsand brothers and sisters. Their report being favorable, in 1845 the restof the family came across the ocean and joined the two already in thiscountry at Kenosha, Wis., near which place they took up their abode. Here they loved and worked till the spring of 1856 when they came toIowa, and commenced to make their homes on the land still owned by them. The spring before Charles had visited Iowa on a tour of inspection, andselected 1000 acres of rich farming land on the bank of the Little Cedar, and entered it at the land office then located at Dubuque. Railroadswere not then built in this section, so they moved their families andhousehold effects in wagons. On the way out at Moscow, Wis., James, second son of Charles, was born June 4, and on the twentieth of the samemonth, anniversary of Henry's birthday, the family landed at theirdestination. For seven weeks they lived in their covered wagons, so busywere they in breaking for the next year's crop. At this time FatherWallace, as he was always called, held the first religious services everheld in Stacyville, in a part of the house now owned by John Penney, thenhowever but a mer shanty. These meetings were at first attended by allsettlers, but later the Penney being Armenian in their belief, did muchtoward organizing the Methodist Episcopal church of which they havecontinued staunch supporters.

Robert the eldest never married. He died in August, 1849. Georgemarried Eliza Bascom. He died July 19, 1857, leaving six children.Arthur and Charles married Harriet and Mary Wallace at Kenosha beforecoming to Iowa. The former now have eight children and sixgrandchildren. The latter have seven children.

Susan Penney was married to J. Stover in Wisconsin. They have threechildren and two grandchildren. Frank married Caroline A. Barker,October 27, 1859. They now have twelve children. John married EmilyPearce, Nove. 23, 1860. They number five in their flock.

Henry married Martha Hall, February 11, 1865, and they have sixchildren. Alfred married Lydia White, Aug. 21, 1866. They have fivechildren. The children are all living on farms except Frank, John andAlfred, who are in business in town.

The parents lived to see all of their children married, and quietlysettled in homes of their own. They witnessed and participated in tworeunions, the first upon the occasion of their golden wedding, and thesecond the summer before Mr. Penney's death. He died July 12, 1872, agedseven-five years. His wife lived nearly six years after his death, andwent to her final rest April 8, 1878, in her seventy-eight year. Thegathering May 29, was in every way a pleasant one. There were presentsixty-five who bore the name of Penney, and third blood relations notbearing the family name, beside a few not related except by marriage. Atthe tables the brothers were seated with their wives in the order of theages, and their children as suited their tastes and conveniences.

Of the grandchildren there are thirty-eight girls to eighteen boysbearing the name of Penney. The next generation in gathering will notconsist of so many "pennies" to the pound if the same relation prevails.Such gatherings are certainly pleasant and serve a twofold purpose inaffording present pleasure to participants and an inducement to beadmitted to that pleasure for outsiders.
