AND HIS WIFE ISABELLA RANDOLPH
12a. JOHN DUNBAR, the second son, was created Earl of Moray in 1372. Hemarried Marjorie, a daughter of Robert, Earl of Strathearn, afterwardsKing Robert II, by his first wife, Elizabeth, daughter of Adam (Sir) Mureof Rowallan. He died before 15 February 1392 when their son John wasstyled Earl of Moray. Their second son was

14a. JAMES DUNBAR of Frendraught became fourth Earl of Moray, succeedinghis cousin Thomas Dunbar, third Earl of Moray. He died or was killedabout 10 August 1430. By his wife, Katherine or Janet Seton, he left twodaughters, Janet and Elizabeth as co-heiresses. Prior to this marriage,he had been handfasted to Isobel Innes, daughter of Walter (Sir) Innes, but she apparently died before marriage. The son of James and Isobel was
15a. Alexander (Sir) DUNBAR of Westfield, who was regarded asillegitimate and therefore ineligible to succeed to the earldom. He wasamply compensated by being given the barony of Westfield, and thehereditary office of Sheriff of Moray. He married Isabel, daughter ofAlexander Sutherland, third baron of Duffus, from which marriage all ofthe Scottish families of Dunbar are said to be descended. Their oldestson was
16a. James (Sir) DUNBAR, second Baron of Westfield, Sheriff of Moray, etc., who married his cousin Euphemia (line 16b), eldest daughter andco-heiress of Patrick Dunbar of Cumnock and Mochrum, thus uniting twoDunbar family lines as well as a great deal of real estate.

SOURCES
Unless otherwise stated, the above information is from the Dunbar andMoray entries found in THE SCOTS PEERAGE, v. 3:239 and v. 6:298; and inTHE COMPLETE PEERAGE, v. 4:503 and v. 9:164.
The identification of the wives on lines 7, 8, and 9 is from an article"A Clarification of the Dunbar Pedigree," by Andrew B. W. MacEwen, appearing in THE GENEALOGIST, v. 9, no. 2, Fall 1988.
Much of the information on lines 14b, 15a and b, 16a and b, and 17, 18,and 19 is from THE BARONAGE OF SCOTLAND, by Robert (Sir) Douglas, published in 1798, beginning at page 113.
At page 120, this book states that Alexander (Sir) Dunbar (line 18), thefather of Margaret Dunbar, was married to a woman whose name has "notcome to our attention," but whom he had two sons, one of them beingPatrick (Sir), his heir. The article identifies his second wife asJanet, daughter of John Leslie of Parkhill, by whom he had another sonand also a daughter, Margaret, who married Robert Munro. I believe thatMargaret was, in fact, a daughter of the first marriage.
The discussion on John Leslie of Parkhill in THE SCOTS PEERAGE, v.7:279-281, says that John married Euphemia Moncrieff shortly after 22October 1541, when as a member of the royal household, he received 50pounds to buy garments for his marriage. The first record naming her ashis (second) wife is dated 10 July 1542. The article further states thattheir daughter Joan [sic] married Alexander (Sir) Dunbar about 1560. Anydaughter of John Leslie of Parkhill would have been at least a generationtoo young to have married Alexander (Sir) Dunbar and to have given birthto a daughter, Margaret, who could have married Robert Munro, 14th Baronof Foulis, and to have given birth to seven of his children before hisdeath at the battle of Pinkie in September 1547. Janet (or Joan) Lesliemust therefore be rejected, but the article's reference to SheriffDunbar's first marriage to an unknown woman invites consideration as towhether Margaret was a product of that marriage.
Fortunately, there is documentary evidence, apparently unknown to theauthor of the article appearing in THE BARONAGE OF SCOTLAND, whichestablishes her parentage. In 1663, one Alexander Munro of Obsdale, agreat-great-grandson of Robert Munro, 14th Baron of Foulis, who marriedMargaret Dunbar, was a career soldier living in France. He wanted tomarry "a French of rank." In order to impress the and to obtain herfamily's consent, he applied to King Charles for a "birth brief," whichwould attest that he was of gentle birth. That document, which stillexists, is set forth in Alexander Mackenzie's HISTORY OF THE MUNROS OFFOWLIS, at pages 171-174. Referring first to Alexander Munro'sgreat-grandfather, the birth brief says:
and Robert was born of the former Robert of Fowlis, Laird thereof(who fell honourably fighting valiantly for his country in the battle ofPinkie), of Anna [sic] Dunbar, daughter of Alexander Dunbar, Sheriff ofMoray, by Jean Falconer, daughter of the Laird of Halcartoun...
In an age when one's status in life depended so much upon one'sancestors, it is reasonable to believe that Alexander Munro of Obsdaleknew or could ascertain the identity of his great-great grandmother.Since the purpose of the birth brief was to impress the family of theproposed bride that he was of gentle birth and worthy of her, it seemshighly likely that, had he been descended from John of Parkhill Leslieand the Earls of Rothes, a family line far more glorious than that of theFalconers, he would have claimed that descent in the birth brief. Thebirth brief was issued in the king's name "By Act of the Lords of SecretCouncil." This is highly persuasive evidence which precedes THE BARONAGEOF SCOTLAND by 135 years!
It appears highly probable that Jean Falconer was the daughter of George(Sir) Falconer of Halkerton and his wife, Elizabeth, daughter of JohnErskine of Dun. George (Sir)'s son and heir, David Falconer ofHalkerton, who married Mariot Dunbar, one of Sheriff Dunbar's cousins, was probably Jean Falconer's brother.
