  3. 6.  John Macfarlane, of Achray & Drumbuie was born on 20 Jan 1749 in Trossachs, Perthshire, Scotland; was christened on 23 Jun 1749 in Aberfoyle, Perthshire, Scotland (son of Malcolm Macfarlane, of Strathnahaun of Duchray and Mary Macfarlane); died in 1815 in Drumbuie Farm, Aberfoyle, Perthshire, Scotland.

    Notes:

1 - To be Janets twin his birth date must be 20 Jan. 1749. It appears their parents had another set of twins eleven months later.

2 - It appears John either inherited the Drumbuie Farm on the death of his wife's father or he purchased it from him.

3 - At one time had the tenancy in the 1780-90's of Glasahoile Farm. On Glasahoile, high on the mountain at the head of glen from which Allt Glasahoile flows, is Loch Tinker, Lochan a Cheird, once believed to be the home of a water-bull.

4 - I did manage to get up to the trossachs but took my family and spent most of the time sitting in tearooms or craft shops. I only managed one farm, that was Drumbuie aka drumbowie aka druim buidhe. As I have previously said it has now been aorbed by the forestry commission but they left an area around the ruin un-planted. An image taken in 2007, in Google, shows this area has been kept clear but it is now overgrown and the drive leading up to the ruin reduced to a small incomplete footpath. There has also been trees planted in front of the ruin and the view from front the front door gone. Within the last couple of years a memorial stone has been laid nearby and when I enquired about this with local forestry regional office nobody knew anything about it or the farm. Permission to lay the stone must have been sought but the usual government agency response prevailed.
I did take a few photos but the area is so overgrown that it was impossibe to an image of the complete house.
[E-mail from Len Russell rec: 20 July 2010]

5 - Drumbuie was probably a dairy farm producing butter as the main source of income with beef once a year. It was a satellite farm for the main farm of Achray. Also includes farms at Brig O Michael and Crahavie.
Loch Achray Hotel was the old Achray farm/house mentioned in the 1901 and before census. The old part is in the middle I think. The 1901 census has the Achray Farm house as having 10 bedrooms
The Brig O Michael farm is now called Achray farm.

Generation: 4

  1. 8.  Malcolm Macfarlane, of Monievreckie was christened on 10 Dec 1721 in Port of Menteith, Perthshire, Scotland; and died.

    Notes:

1 - Malcolm farmed Monievreckie, and was in occupation of these lands from 1746 to 1755, as his four elder children were all born there. In 1759 we find him in Arnlamm, where his son Malcolm was born, and in 1762, in Milnling, where the youngest Alexander was born.

2 - The fine Marilyn of Craig of Monievreckie in the Menteith Hills near Aberfoyle. Although only 400m high, this is tough going at any time and the traverse of the range is surprisingly strenuous. With bottomless fresh snow on heather and bracken and a biting wind it was ridiculously hard. Dignified progress was not an option. But the sun was shining and the views took away any breath that the wind had left.

3 - Most challenging climb was Craig of Monievreckie. Tackling it from Arntamie looks fine, and is at first, but the route I took from there is not recommended unless you're fond of head-high bracken, thigh-depth heather and thistles, excess tree density, steep bouldery slopes, and a climb up the conglomerate of the Highland Boundary Fault (aided by a via ferrata in the shape of wire from a broken fence). I did reach the trig point and eventually one of the forest tracks down to Braeval car park. But there must be an easier way!

[Interesting comment this one as all three farns mentioned were all owned or tacked by Macfarlanes at some stage, Monievreckie by this Malcolm, Arntamie by his son Malcolm, & Braeval, where Macfarlane of Gartartan a cadet branch of Macfarlane of Arrochar, rebuilt Gartartan Castle in the 16th century & where Malcolm Macfarlane of Braeval (next to Malling) who was invited to a "Scotch Hairst Kirn" i.e. harvest festival, at the farm of Ledard on Loch Ard. Percy Yorke [the writer of the account of the event published in 1821] calls him, "Old Braeval", who had a son called Peter.]

4 - CRAIG OF MONIVRECKIE - A name applied to a large precipice at the south western extremity of "Monteith Hills"
MONTEITH HILLS - A range of hills, extending from "Creag Dhubh" on the south west, to "Creag a Bhacain", on the north east. The principal features are "Craig of Monievreckie" and ""Creag Dhubh". The spelling of this name to be ruled by that adopted for the parish of Port of Monteith.

Assumed to be the Malcolm and Mary that IGI shows as parents of Duncan.-Ed.

2 - Re-Malcom of Stranahaun of Duchray I36597, I have still been searching for his family. He was reputed to be born 1722 Aberfoyle, as you know there is no record for that but there was an unnamed son born to a John McFarlan and Janet Grahamn 1719 in Aberfoyle. (Malcom's 2 eldest where named John and Janet). This couple had an earlier son John born 1716 at Aultanam breac farm which is between Drumbuie and Brig of Michael and was quite a big establishment up to about 1870s. The site is now levelled and with second generation forest planting on it. I asked about it and it could have been taken down when the Duke extended Achray House.
I also visited the Stranahaun site. The sheepfold is still there in good order but the house was demolished and rebuilt nearby as the waterworks cottage in the 1860s. I was told by the forestry they are clearing and rebuilding some of he old farmsteads that were engulfed when the forest went up but Drumbuie wasn't one of them
