    Notes:

    He was a Senator of the College of Justice, an Ordinary Lord of Session from 1561 until 1584, and notable Scottish poet.
    He held the political office of Keeper of the Great Seal of Scotland and was also the Keeper of the Privy Seal of Scotland, from 1563 to 1567, and was succeeded in this post by his son Sir John Maitland, 1st Lord Maitland of Thirlestane.

    Notes:

    Malcolm's eldest son James became the 4 th lord Fleming. His marriage to Barbara Hamilton brought the Flemings into the Hamilton party fold; Barbara was the eldest daughter of the Duke of Chatelherault, heir to the throne prior to the birth of Mary's son, James, in 1566. The 4th lord Fleming held the office of Lord Chamberlain and was one of four Scottish Commissioners to die from typhoid or poisoning in Paris in 1558 after the wedding of Mary, Queen of Scots to the French dauphin.

    Notes:

    During an eventful life, he was captured at Solway Moss in 1542 and marched to the Tower of London. Subsequently released with his son held hostage, Malcolm at first appeared to support Henry VIII's proposal to marry the English king's son to the infant queen Mary but then changed his position. Prior to his death on the battlefield at Pinkie in 1547, he started work building a collegiate church in Biggar, the last of its kind in Scotland.

    Notes:

    In return for services offered to the Crowns of Scotland and France, the title of Duc de Ch?tellerault (1548) was presented to James Hamilton, 2nd Earl of Arran, Chief of the Name, and regent of Scotland during Mary, Queen of Scots, and France's infancy. This title, though now without any benefices, is still in contention between the heir male and the heir general of Arran, respectively the Duke of Abercorn and the Duke of Hamilton.

    James married Margaret (of Morton) Douglas before 23 Sep 1532. Margaret (daughter of James (3rd Earl of Morton) Douglas and Princess Catherine Stewart) died after 24 May 1579. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
